Would the Motorcraft FL820S be suitable for a 12,000 mile oci? My Mercury will probably be driven less than that annually. Am considering using this filter along with Mobil 1 EP.

IMO it would be if the engine is reasonably clean to begin with.
With today's oils having good cleaning abilities it might not be a bad idea to change it at 6K the first time before going a 12K regiment.
It certainly is one of the best filters for the Ford mod engines.

Ford already recommends Motorcraft filters for 10K OCIs on their new cars, so the filter is definitely capable of long OCIs.

Still, given the "older" engine, it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy two Motorcraft filters, and swap out at 6K miles. Two MC filters still comes out cheaper than all long OCI filters, and topping up the slight loss of oil in the filter swap will help maintain tbn. Not a bad move!

I think it may; I have one that will be changed at 10K soon and at the one that I ran to 8.5K looked just fine.

I was going to suggest he go to the UOA GAS ENGINE FORUM and look up your UOA results this morning but got sidetracked.
Is the 10K mile MC filter surgery coming anytime soon?

My opinion is yes it would, but don't expect any warranty help from anyone if it isn't. A clean running engine shouldn't load up this filter and it's generally well constructed. You would be safer to go with a synthetic media filter with higher capacity and it would have the side benefit of significantly improving efficiency.. from about 93.7%@ 20 um vs 99%@ 20um (Fram Ultra, Wix/Napa Platinum) or 99%@25um (Puro Syn). The Puro is rated by the mfr. at 10K and the Ultra is 15K. Don't know about the Wix.
