I Google'd the firing order of this engine and got this

Only thing that seems odd is the #1 on my engine is at 7 o-clock. There is no post at 6 o-clock. Just 5 and 7 o-clock.

I have not run the engine. Waiting on carb. But have new wires coming to replace the sorry looking mix that is on there now.

So yours is closer to this then:

There are no markings on the cap for #1? IIRC, [but its been a few years since I changed my cap] that #1 was marked and the cap can only go on one way.

Just bring #1 TDC on the compression stroke and look where the rotor is pointing.

This.

Often there's a 1 on the cap that should be aligned with the rotor at this point if the distributor has been stabbed correctly.

I was pretty sure they were marked. Unless the distributor was removed or incorrectly installed, using the 1 or mark on the cap should be OK for replacing wires in the correct order. Some caps are marked on the outside and I think some are marked on the inside.

A couple of other options:
-Print out the diagram that OVERKILL posted and cut out the bit with the distributor. Bring the cut-out over to your distributor an clock the diagram until it matches your distributor.
-Just guess at where #1 is. If you get it wrong it probably won't start, but might start and run very very badly. Either way, if you guessed wrong you'll know pretty quickly.

1 is where the rotor points at tdc compression stroke on #1

Turn the engine by hand until the mark on the balancer is at the zero mark on the timing scale. Remove the cap the rotor should point straight away from the side of the engine or nearly so. (If it is 180 degrees off, turn the crank all the way around once and check again.)

If the distributor gear is engaged out of time, it won't line up like the chart shows, though the engine can still be made to run by putting the wires on in non-standard places. In that case it's best to pull the distributor out and re-engage it.

That is correct, and IIRC the Motorcraft cap and several others are marked with a 1 on either the inside or the outside of the cap, and the cap can only go on one way. So you put the rotor on, and the cap, and connect the #1 wire to the cap and the first cylinder. The rotor rotates clockwise, so clockwise in rotation next to #1 the wire goes to cylinder 5, then 3,6,2,4. Firing order is 1,5,3,6,2,4. It's an easy job.
