DETROIT: The Italian carmaker Fiat is nearing a deal to take a large stake in Chrysler, the most financially troubled of the Detroit automakers, and begin selling small cars in the United States through Chrysler, a person with knowledge of the talks said Monday.

I'm not sure if I'd buy a Fiat/Chrysler, but it certainly adds something to the Chrysler stable which needs more fuel efficient vehicles.

It gives Fiat a large, existing distribution network inside the US.

It's an interesting play for both parties. Of course, it's just talks right now. But on the surface, it looks like there are benefits for both parties.

There goes Fiat's quality.

That would be the Barchetta, which is one of the cars I drove as a rental. It was discontinued a few years ago.

I don't think sturdy and 124 belong in the same sentence.

For grins and giggles, I looked up the Barchetta on Wikipedia:

"Its 131 PS / 96 kW engine is the 1.8 L petrol engine, with twin-cam and variable camshaft timing, which is notorious for its diesel-like clattering noise when failing."

That sounds more like a "classic" Fiat.
