I was reading a Reddit sub and found a Redditor that supposedly works for AutoZone and states that he knows who manufactures parts for all of their store brands. I was curious to find out who makes new Duralast alternators as I bought one today after my new Napa decided to die after exactly 4 years and 15k miles (the truck doesn’t get driven much). I was surprised to see that Remy possibly builds them for the Duralast Gold line.

Thing with aftermarket parts is they could be built by one manuf one day and someone else the next.

The DPFE sensor for my Ranger was a FoMoCo part with the gold print scrubbed off, this was a part being sold by Standard Motor Products. Same with the backup coil I bought before a long trip.

I assume this just means that SMP makes the OEM part. If it were a part that didn't test as well, then why go to the trouble of printing on them before packaging?

Unbelievable, Raybestos got spun off, can't trust Remy ( thinking it may still have an OEM connection )...Pining for the good ole days as usual, sorry. Keep forgetting EVERYTHING is globally sourced nowadays. At least I can say I was there when I could get a Delco-Remy ignition module for my 77' Cutty. Or even a Delco-Remy tailight bulb for that matter.. ( Yes, I still have a few 1157's in the garage bin )

Its the same way with OE parts and whoever makes them for the OEMs. People will say a blank statement like "XX company makes all of Mazda's brake pads" Well that's interesting because they will lest the vendor on some parts and I have seen Galfer and Akebono. But we can have the same part number part come from different vendors all the time. They are just made to the spec the OEM calls for.

Big happenings in the Euro parts dept too, you can buy FAW or SAIC VW Audi parts from China for a lot less and they are genuine OE of like quality if you buy from a trusted seller. High pressure fuel pumps, water pumps, oil pumps timing components you name can all be had for a third or less. So you say I don't want chinesium I want German made so you order the OE part from a dealer or European import and guess what, made in China is on the box.

Iwis is making OE and their own branded chains in Poland, VW/audi is making tensioners in Italy, INA, Borg Warner, Kolben Schmidt and many other great Euro brands are made in China, Poland, Slovakia, etc but very few in Germany any more. the cost of labor and especially cost of energy to run manufacturing plants is mind boggling high.

Same with BMW for what it’s worth.

The new part number for the oil cooler service kits on the 6.0 Powerstroke are now Chinesium. They don't even bother to take the Dorman badge off of them.

Saw this posted on a FB group for diesel people. The 03/04 round EGR cooler for a 6.0L. They didn't even bother to take the Dorman tag off the part before boxing it up as a Ford part. Its literally been 2-3 years since I have sold one. I usually steer people to Bullet Proof for EGR coolers since that is a nice upgrade for not much more money.

That is a disgrace, selling cheap Dorman parts in OE Ford packaging and don't even bother to take the tags off.

I agree. I mean Dorman can come in really handy because they make a lot of parts and they’re available everywhere if you need it fast. But for mainstream applications with good parts availability I wouldn’t want anything Dorman.

I’d be pretty irritated if I spent big bucks on Motorcraft, ACDelco, etc to open it and find a Dorman part. I’m sure Standard, Denso, etc aren’t perfect but at least those companies are capable of making quality items if you ask them to! Dorman, IDK… just looking at or handling most of their stuff you get the sense it’s poorly made. Sure, there are exceptions, but that isn’t the norm.

Within the last month or so I purchased a brand new (not remanufactured) Duralast Gold alternator from AutoZone for one of my vehicles and upon inspection, the alternator itself was sourced by WAI Global (www.waiglobal.com) and sold to AutoZone. Whether WAI Global manufactured it themselves or purchased it from another manufacturer is anybody's guess.

To me it depends on how much work it is to install the part. If its a quick bolt on you can roll the dice on a cheaper part. If its a major pain to swap I want an original Denso.
