Anyone know how much to tighten the oil drain plug on a 4.6-litre Ford V8 in a 2005 Mustang GT?

I'd appreciate the official information in lbs-ft, if anyone has it, and I'd like to know the source of the information, if you don't mind.

The engine is all-aluminum in 05 (block and heads), but I assume the pan is regular steel.

Thanks.

The original engine Shop Manual for my 70 Mach 1 suggests 15-20 ftlbs. on the drain plug, but I've never used a torque wrench on it. It just needs to be snug enough not to leak and you can strip them out quite easily.

You may want to consider putting in a Fumoto valve, in place of the drain plug. It makes changing the oil soooo simple. I've had them on my cars ('69 Volve, 75 Trooper II, '95 Saturn (w/421,000 miles on it) and '97 Buick) for 40 years. Would not have a vehicle without it.

I don't think this car's drain plug has a removable washer.

Anybody else have an official torque setting for an 05 4.6?

The newest info I have is for the 2004 models. I don't know if they're different but the 2004 model specifies 10 lb/ft of torque as listed in the alldata service manual.

Sorry. You may have to go by a local dealership and ask them to check their service manuals.

If you insist on using a torque wrench, make sure you use the correct model appropriate for that low setting. An inch lb. model would be better (120 inch lbs.)

I say this becuase I have seen people twist off threads due to poor wrench calibration at either end of the scale.
