First... THIS IS NOT FROM MY CAR!!! No way would anything I take care of EVER look like this!

This Firestone filter (PH5 xreference) is off of a 97 Tahoe w/ the tree-fiddy engine. Owner complained of some harsh knocking on startup, and for the first minute or so of operation. He also had some "mayonnaise" around the filler cap. The truck is a 90% short-tripper, so that explains the goo in the filler tube pretty well. I told him to come on over, we'll change the oil and see if we can see anything there. The window sticker from Firestone showed it was almost 3,200 miles past its 3,000 mile OCI so this oil/filter combo has 6,200 miles and had 9 months on it. He says it was filled with synthetic, but the sticker made no mention of it.

I performed the oil change and watched the oil on its way out of the pan. It didn't seem so bad really. It was dark, almost black, but still clear. It was not milky at all or "chocolatey", so I don't think coolant was getting into the oil. However, it did smell bad. I can't really give you a great idea of the smell... um... the only thing I can think of is your pee in the morning after having 2-3 packages of Ramen noodle soup for dinner the night before. (There's the proof that I went to college!) No noticeable particulates.

I installed a Bosch Premium filter and Valvoline SynPower 5-30. I didn't pre-fill the filter because I was using a 5+qt jug and didn't want to deal with that big awkward thing under the truck. There was an initial rattle on startup until the oil system was primed, then everything was nice and smooth. The knocking he previously heard was gone.

He had to get going, and I was ready for lunch so we shook hands and he was off. I went on about my day but kept thinking about how bad the oil smelled. When I got back from running some errands, I decided to cut open the oil filter just to see what things looked like.

WHOA!!! See the following pics:

This is what I poured out of the can

This is the bottom of the can AFTER I poured out all of that stuff!

Not only was this packed FULL of crud, the adbv and bypass pretty much fell off of the filter when I lifted the innards out of the can. The bypass was totally crudded over. As bad as all of this was, I can barely see how oil got through this filter, whether through the media OR the bypass, as that was plugged up! Look again at the thing!

After seing all this, I called dude back and told him to come back in two weeks and we'll cut current filter open to see what we got in there. Depending on what we find we'll either do another oil change with cheap dino or just change the filter and revisit. Either way, some MMO is going in that motor.

I'm guessing the PCV system isn't working right either, so a new PCV valve will be going in and we'll check the lines for airflow.

Wow, I wouldn't think the filter would be that sludged up after only 6,000 miles and 9 months, especially since much of that time was during the summer.

I've gone that far on conventional over the winter with my dad's car and there was no sludge or anything. I'm thinking the PCV system is severely gummed up, especially if condensation is forming around the oil cap. I'd also check for a stuck open thermostat. A stuck open stat with a belt driven fan will make an engine run very cool.

Thanks for taking the time to cut the filter open and post pics.

This should be a great warning to the non-mechanically inclined of the importance of proper car maintenance.

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT SLUDGE? I don't know that a 6,000 mile OCI is really an issue. I bet the previous oil change was done in less than perfect circumstances (cold, not allowing enough time to drain. I too doubt that the oil was synthetic and would perhaps suggest that the filter was accidentally not changed (if it was done at Firestone. In these situations you hope it's just the sludge you see. Looking forward to the followup and thanks for the pics.

Wow. That is bad.

I did 8k OCI's regularly on my '02 Cavalier, did lots of short trips, and I don't think that car was sludged up like this.

Would love to hear the follow-up!

No oil will sludge up like this in 9 months and 6000 miles will it? Or can a short trip only car do this to oil? This is scary looking

I dont think they miss it, they just dont do it. too lazy, pressed for time etc. who knows.

I think that this filter really was only on there for 9 months. It was in excellent shape externally, and pretty clean. I'm of the mind that PCV issues are at play here.

I will definitely post pics of the next filter and update as I have more info for you.

Oh, and this was a Champ e-core filter.

If I find a lot of junk in the next filter, I'm not wasting another good one on short cleaning OCIs. I have a few Valucrafts (pretty much identical to the Firestone filter) I'll throw at it over a few short runs and some Mobil C5K I gor for next to nothing.

Who really knows if they changed the oil at all when brought into the Firestone for an oil change. That oil may have been in the sump, along with the filter, for quite a few "Fictitious" oil changes with "mystery Dino oil".

Another example of why you should do your own Oil and filter changes.... or else have them done by someone you know and trust.

Jeez, this is why I don't do extended oil changes and change my oil filter every other time

The Firestone in my area uses Kendall Synthetic blend oil.
