This is the area between Barstow,ca and Victorville,ca. During the depression and Dust bowl time the people heading to California on 66 had a choice once to Barstow. Head west towards Bakersfield or South towards San bernardino, los Angelas etc.

The ones that chose south would have gone this way and it was a dirt road back then. Wasn't much out there then. It has sprouted a few houses in the last few years.

I'm so glad I got to see the West by road, rail and river, when I was reasonably young over several trips.

I40 is something. US 40 is something else.

To KGMtech's post: At a Kansas rest-stop I saw an English lady brake down with a case of "isolation/insignificance".
It happens in desolate regions and in big cities which drown one in texture, art and congestion.

I had that a few times once on a motorcycle trip through the desolate parts of Nevada and Utah. It's called kenophobia and is a feeling of dread from being in open spaces. I think it comes from the realization of being confronted by how insignificant the self is with this world. On the road with just me, my mechanical steed, the rocks, cacti and scorpions.

Humbling experience.

There are many on here that are just not aware of how desolate "The West" can be. Two plus hours of no cellphone, radio coverage. That's when my XM subscription is great!

I've been on that section of old route 66, just because I wanted to see it, no other reason. It's desolate. Just imagine driving on it in a car with a radiator that tends to boil over and doesn't have air conditioning.

Never been to Barstow but I go past this road sign frequently. Guess if I stayed on I-40 I'd get there.

And if you stayed on I-40 you'd get here.

I driven from Kingman, Arizona to Amarillo, Texas on I-40 coming from Vegas back home with a detour/stop at the Grand Canyon....Slept in Albuquerque, NM.

Of all the road we covered....That stretch sucked the most!
