I picked up a couple of these Denso oil filters today. It looks very interesting because it has a plastic wrap covering the opening and there is some grease on the rubber gasket already. I never saw anything like this before.

Anyone use these filters before? I've never used these Denso filters before. Since I've started to work on my own car, I've always used Napa Gold (Wix) and Purolator Premium (White canister) filters because that is all I can find locally.

How do these compare to Napa Gold or Purolators?

I had a few problems with the denso filter I was using on my 2001 Civic with 205,000 miles on it. I was using the 150-1009 which are a good bit smaller than the one your using. To look at the problem see flow vs filtration under oil filters. Very long discussion with 102 posts. Hope you have good luck with the 1001's.

Jonny Z, you are close. I own a Gen 4.5 (2000) Camry 4 cylinder. The two cars share similar size filters. The only difference between the filters is that the Gen 5 uses filters that are about 1/2"-3/4" longer. I chose to use the larger filters because my understanding is that larger filter will be better. Though I could be really wrong

Anyhow...I cut the Denso filter open. It was much harder to open than the Purolator I opened earlier in my "Myster Oil Filter" thread a few posts down.

BTW, what's the easiest way to open these things? I'm using a can opener...

I really don't know what to say about them since I don't even know what's what...The Denso looks similar to the Purolator one as far as the pieces go. But all the pieces are different.

Denso makes great quality filters, and is the primary OEM for Toyota's oil and air filters. The most highly regarded Toyota OEM oil filter (part no. 90915-20004) is made by Denso and has the pre-lubed gasket and plastic-wrapped base as well.

Were you able to find these Denso oil filters locally in SoCal?

I found both of them locally and bought the two that they had in stock. One of them is in the pics above. The other will be going into my car in a couple weeks.

They had 1 dozen of the slightly smaller filters for Toyota 4 bangers in stock. Those were size 150-1000.

If I don't have a similar problem like gulledge, who posted above, I will probably go back and get a few more or have them special order me a couple.

These look nothing like the factory Denso oil filter I pulled out of a 2001 Camry V6 assembled in Kentucky. That filter was made in Japan and had some of the strangest design features I've ever seen. The bypass valve opening was a 3 mm wide plug at the opposite end. It had a plastic cage (not like the Ecores). The baseplate was like nothing I'd ever seen on another filter.

Do you happen to be talking about the 90915-20003?

The 90915-20003 (6 cyl.) and 90915-20004 (V8) are both made in Japan and use an interesting resin filter element that I haven't seen in any other filter.

There was a good web page describing these unique filters on an international Toyota site, but I can no longer find the page.

There are plenty of web sites with pictures of the 90915-20004 though.

Mind if I ask which store in SoCal carries them?

This one was made in Thailand. Does that make any difference?

The ones made in Thailand use a more traditional filter design (not like the unique design of the Japanese-made filters), and some feel the overall quality of construction isn't as good. But the Japanese-made OEM Toyota filters are very hard to find these days, as Toyota stopped importing them to the U.S. a year or more ago in favor of the Thailand-made Denso filters (e.g. the Thailand-made 90915-YZZD3 replaced the Japanese-made 90915-20004).

Im a big fan of the denso first time fit line. Use them on the 94 integra with 166k miles, the 94 previa with 191k miles, and the 94 3000GT VR-4 wth 116k miles. No issues, and insolubles are super low on all three. UOAS all look great.

The Denso Aftermarket filter looks just like the new cheeper Toyota OEM that is made in thailand.
I work in parts at a Toyota Dealer.

Here is a Japanese Denso filter from a Tundra V-8

It looks far superior in construction to the Thailand-made dealer replacement ones. I used a Purolator since I could not get the Japanese one. Note the molded resin element.

There's no way to do it "online", you must call...

I have noticed this Japan vs Thailand on my OEM filters for my Mitsubishi, now I am hearing on this thread that they are possibly different? I would imagine that Denso makes the filters to the OEM specs. So why would a company like Toyota or Mitsubishi have seperate filters made for the JDM and USDM markets? Makes no sense to me.

I feel they are the same filters, just made in a different factory to save money. Like everyone else. I cannot imagine quality is suffering at all. Now if you buy a "Denso" brand filter WITHOUT the OEM logos on it, then those may possibly be made differently since they are not OEM spec filters. But the ones with your Cars Logo and Car Brand Part number on the canister I am sure are the same design as what came with the car. If someone can show me a Mits or a toyota filter, Denso, identical numbers, one from Japan and one from Thailand and show pics of them both, and can prove they are different, then I will stand corrected. I just don't see anyone doing that yet. Any Takers on that? Im curious too.
