As I was painting the window trim on the house I noticed these holes in the ground. I then saw Mr. Chip pop his head out. Great, I noticed a few scurrying around just recently. looks like they set up shop. Eating and digging up our flowers and garden.

After some research I stuffed the holes with steel wool and packed it in deep.
Next weapon is the "pool of death".

Simple to make too. 5 gallon bucket, a board, sunflower seeds and peanut butter. Fill bucket half way with water. Put in sunflower seeds till all of water is covered. Put a dollop of PB on the seeds in the water.
On the board place it against the bucket, position it so it extends 4-5 inches or so over the water. Bait it with PB and a few seeds. Chippy cant resist PB and WILL jump after it in the bucket.
Destructive little buggers they are.

Cute for awhile till they destroy things.
Score 1 for the pool....

They are too cute for me to kill. As long as they stay outside and don't mess with anything significant, they can live in the garden and eat my flowers.

Why make them suffer( i.e. the pool of death thing )? Buy some HAVAHART type traps( there are other cheaper brands out there )so you can catch them and relocate them far enough away that they no longer cause harm at your home. I have used those traps very effectively for Alvin and his buddies as well as Squirrels. They work great. Chipmunks are EASY to trap alive in catch and release type traps and then relocate. Read the info in the 2nd link below( they also sell cheap traps ).

HAVAHART Chipmunk Traps

How To Catch Article & Cheap Traps

If you feel killing them is the only solution, or you don't want to shell out the cash for the traps, then at least buy a BB gun and humanely put them down with one shot. Drowning them is just plain cruel. That is no different than throwing unwanted puppies or kittens into the river in a sack or pillow case.

I am no animal rights activist or bleeding heart. I hunt, eat meat, have a leather coat, etc.... I just have issues with selecting such a cruel method to deal with the problem when you have other options that will resolve it humanely. I have dealt with Chipmunk and Squirrel infestations before by humane trapping and it is easy and it works. No need to kill them when there is another way to handle it. If killing is the only acceptable option to you then get a BB gun and do it fast and quick. Drowning them in a bucket is just unnecessary and cruel.

Chippy? You are supposed to give them breakfast then into a cab home ASAP.

Keeping them around long enough they start to gnaw holes in things and expect your hot water bills to skyrocket.

If you won't introduce her to Mom by the third date, don't waste your time bro.

Be sure to look carefully for the "leave behinds", mostly jewelery. Territory marking is endemic to the species.

I hear you. I wrestled with that. But if you release them they become soemone elses problem. Take my sister, they live next to a state park. They had next to no squirrels until people took their live trapped squirrels and released them basically in their back yard. Now they are inundated by the tree rats.

Pellet gun is at the ready now. I think the steel wool took them out.
They are extremely destructive.

It took a little bit of thinking, but I nailed a red squirrel with a rat sized snap trap. I had failed with the havahart ,because the bugger was small enough to slip through the bars. I baited the trap twice without setting it. 3rd time I set it. It is worth the 2$ for an instant death, not slow drowning of the bucket.

removed the pool. seems like after inspection of the holes they are not yet been re dug out. The steel wool seems to have worked. I dont see any scampering around.
So far that is.
Still not sure on the live trap. dont want to cause other people problems.

The pellet gun is illegal to discharge in the city and the buggers are in site of the house.....

My brother in law has been shooting them with his pellet guns (scopes on all of them). Fopr 10+ years. He shoots out of his back window. He has shot around 850 now.

Release them into the woods out in the country somewhere not in a neighborhood where they will do it to others. When I trapped a family of squirrels that got into my shed I took them approx. 8 miles away to a combo swamp/wood lot. No houses near bye. Let all 6 go there.

As another person mentioned, you can always shoot them out of a window so no one sees you.

The live traps work great as long as you get them made specifically for small critters like mice and "munks". IF the trap is too big they can just climb out.

Chipmunks and Squiriells are protected in Quebec. You shoot them with a pellet rifle you can get in a ton of trouble. Just a note to check the bylaws guys.

That's nuts. Chipmunks are one of the most destructive creatures on the planet. They breed like..well..chipmunks.

That thinking was the mistake I made. The yard wasn't good enough for them, they started digging holes along my house's foundation and have undermined the sidewalk leading to my front door.

Kill them. Kill them all.

Im getting to this stage....
looking at live trap now. but way too many oak trees in the older neighbor hood.
Hoping for the owl to come back. One was here a few years ago, the population disappeared.
