CV Joint question

one of our cars (2000 kia sephia, AT) makes a clicking sound when turning corners in either direction, but mostly when turning left.

from what I gather on most cars this would indicate failing/messed up outer CV Joints.

a local shop said that if we bring the parts they will do both sides for $100, sounds great but I'm a bit confused on the parts.

is a "CV joint half shaft assembly" both inner and outer or just outer? he said it's $25 to inspect it and make sure thats what it is, and if we decide to do it then the $25 goes to the labor so it would be good to have the parts on hand to go ahead with it and since no local store carries them I have to order them from rockauto or something.... any help would be awesome!

it makes noise going left and right, but it appears to only do it if you give it gas WHILE turning a corner.... doesn't make it in any other situation.

It's cv joints and you turn left more than right, but you need to check the inner's too. Find out what is available in replacements, might be that you have to buy the complete shaft, either left or right. Don't by cheap stuff if the car is a keeper, and this guy is giving you a good deal as far as I can tell by your description. Start at the parts department and the internet and learn what's available.

$100 for labor is a good deal. I have replaced a set of CV joints before, and its not fun. As explained to me by a mechanic before: People do almost of their driving in a fairly straight patern by which the ball bearings wear groves in the CV channels while in that position . When you turn left or right the bearings pop in and out of the grove, making that clicking sound. Make sure to replace the CV boots also, thats what holds the axel grease in.

sounds good, what is a half shaft assembly? does it have both inner & outer or is it something different? from the sounds of it it's most likely the outer right? I heard that if it's the inners then it will make that noise driving straight and under acceleration.

The half shaft contains both an inner and outer joint.

get a rebuilt halfshaft. it will save a ton on labor. when i was a tech, i refused to install boots or joints by themselves. if someone insisted, no warranty went on the work. basically the total price was the same if you replaced a boot or the halfshaft. if it was just a boot or a joint i would triple the labor at a minimum. almost every shop around where i live has the same policy.

its not a "ton" more labour. the only additional labour involved is cleaning out the offending joint and regreasing it.
otherwise, weither or not you rebuild or replace, you still gotta remove the old joint. and you still gotta put the thing back in. all the extra steps are the same.

I agree with bdcardinal. Get the halfshaft. The halfshaft is the entire drive axle for whatever half of the car you're working on, from the transaxle to the wheel hub. It's much easier and more reliable than just trying to replace joints.

well each halfshaft is only like $56 new so it's no biggie, just wanted to make sure it was both.... I read that it was just easier to do the whole thing instead of an inner or outer and saves a bit of labor, plus you might as well do the inner while you are at it right? thanks guys, appreciate it! awesome.

i see youve made up youre mind but just for reference, the inners dont see the odd ngles that the outers do, and they usually last 2-3 times longer. normally you dont do the inner unless it looks bad.

Sorry for bumping this one but why create a new topic unnecessarily?

I am looking for both drive axles on 2000 Nissan Maxima. How are the Advance Auto GSP brand? I will be buying the parts but will have my mechanic install it. With 30% AAP discount, I am looking at close $100 savings compared to what my mechanic will be charging for the parts. I have nothing to go by except the picture on AAP website.

Has anybody used CV parts form AAP?

It is better to buy the half shaft than to replace a joint. The half shaft should have a warranty too.

You will get new/rebuilt parts and a warranty and have a more reliable set up than to just fix a joint.

I am talking about the half shafts. anybody know if this brand is OK from AAP?

I'd go for it.
But no, I can not stand behind those exact parts. They are not horribly complicated, and rebuilds have a very good track record from 'whomever'.

New ones typically aren't that much more expensive than remanufactured units and you won't get a unit that's had low spots welded up or hot spots ground down.

It was like $15 difference when I sold them. Probably less now.

I don't know any retailers that stock just the CV joint anyway, at least not in the same numbers that they stock the entire axle in.

+1 on new ones. Depending upon who does the rebuilds, they can be quite good, but parts store rebuilds arent to be trusted, IMO. Chances are the units are reground, into the case hardening and so you have softer, more wear-prone bearing surfaces.

In the world where Ive had multiple CVs done before (old MB diesels), it can mean the difference between a 50k mile replacement and a 150k mile replacement. Lots of data there, as it is a group who has consistent >>200k cars and people who keep them.

That data may be irrelevant if youre not keeping the car long.

They are typical Chinese parts with low end boots but should work okay for a couple of years.Would i use them?
I have not and probably wont on anything decent.Stay well clear of Cardone rebuilts they are terrible.

If the car is a keeper you could just take the old ones to Mitchell Brake & Drive Shaft Service in N Grafton.
They will redo the old one like new with OEM quality and balance them.
Excellent workmanship and quality, might be worth a phone call anyway.

Unfortunately, the telephone number for Mitchell is disconnected. Are you sure they are still in business?
