On I-95 in the Brevard county area(Florida) there are about 4(maybe more) empty Sherrifs cars that have been sitting(at various points) on the side of the road for over a week now...whats the idea behind this? Is it to make unsuspecting drivers to think that there is actually an officer there, possibly monitoring speeds? Are they car pooling to a convention? I just dont get why multiple $50,000+ cruisers are rusting on the side of the road instead of patroling with actual officers inside. Certainly there is an idea or tactic behind this?

At least they're real. In Poland we have cardboard cutouts painted like cop cars sitting on the side of the roads.

Yes, they place empty patrol cars at various places on the road empty (many places have more cars than officers, or use "retired" cars) to slow people down, I have even seen ones with a live radar in them. They will then usualy put a real cop there to catch speeders who go used to the fake being there.

if the cruisers were filled with cops then it would be $95,000+ sitting on the side of the road having the same effect.
when people see it they slow down, and that is the name of the game.

In Minneapolis, I drive past about a dozen police cars when I go home from work at 9am, all just parked there on the side of the road one behind the other. Some days they are all there and some days there are none there at the same point in the day. I figured they would have a specific spot for these to park where someone wouldn't be able to come with a key, spray paint, or a hammer and damage them all in one swoop, being that there have been 8 cars bashed in one night only a block away and these were parked there the same morning.

Well see, my logic sees it as if this workstation was occupied, then it would be bringing in revenue.

Kinda puts out the message, that "we arent going to be patroling, so we threw out these decoys."

But then what reallys got me thinking too...is why are these Sherrifs cars and not HWY Patrol cars on I-95???

The whole thing really makes me scratch my head everytime I pass these decoys.

They did this on the Illinois tollway for a while, parking older cruisers that they weren't using except for backup -- so in effect the car was going to be parked somewhere no matter what.

The funny part is that they left one car along a stretch of I-88 for so long that someone got a Dunkin Donuts box and put it on the hood.

Every now and they they'd replace a decoy with a manned car and go nuts writing tickets.

Probably because the first instinct a speeder is going to have when he sees the shilouette of a cop car is "Oh ####!" and hit the brakes rather than thinking "Gee, is that a LEO that has jurisdiction here".

They do that all around Louisiana, they leave the car there for a while and the first couple times people that travel that particular route daily see it they slow down and than they learn that no one is in the car and pay no attention to it, than they put someone in it with a live radar and go apedoodoo writing tickets. Opus1, Kenner left one of their cars out too long and someone jacked it up and stole the tires and left it up on blocks, they also stole the radios and busted up the light bar. I have a picture around here somewhere.

blupupher, they had cardboard cars for a while down here...until they started ending up with holes in them.

What makes you think a Crown Vic loaded for LEO cost $50K?

It's done for a reason. To (attempt) slow traffic down. Ever notice the ratio of idiots that can't drive to people that do drive good?

I'm talking about people that leave a fair amount of room and Keep an eye on what's going on 1500 feet ahead!

There is an old Crown Vic parked on the side of the road on 301 between Baldwin and Ocala with a Blue child's plastic bucket on the roof. Since is now at least 10 or more years old you can quickly see it is a fake. Mt Lebanon Police department has a real dummy they put behind the wheel when they park their cars around the township. BTW they now lock the doors since the last dummy got stolen a few years ago.

A few years ago there was a radio station in a nearby large town that decided to have some fun by putting empty donut boxes on the empty police cars. The police were not amused.

It is stupid to place cars at the side of the road, since it increases the chance for someone to have an accident, and makes it difficult for emergency vehicles to get by, on the shoulder, in case of heavy traffic.

Just part of the general stupidity of unrealisticly low speed limits and trying to enforce tham.

I can remember in the early days of the double nickel, civic groups helping as volenteers in the cars.

Speed Limits are more about REVENUE $$$$ than safety or anything else. Monies that are collected for traffic infractions should be earmarked for road improvements etc...and not be put into the general fund of the municipality.

You guys would not think it is stupid if it saved the lives of one of your family members, now would you?? It is no different than when the police call the radio stations and have the radio stations announce "radar hot-spots". The empty car is meant to deter speeders, and it works.

WOW.... this is retarded...

just goes to show that the requirements to be a police officer (a virgin priest) don't mesh with the reality of society therefore there are not enough people qualified to fill the posts and all the extra cars they have from lack of officers get pushed on the side of the road as deterrents.... sweet.

Our state Government came into power promising to remove unmarked cop cars from the road and replace them with normally marked police cars...they were citing that deterence is their aim, not revenue.

Well the unmarked cars are back in force, and speed cameras are everywhere.

Only last week, a guy who was warning motorists of a mobile speed camera was charged with obstructing Police.
