I know technically the answer will be yes, but would anyone honestly recommend using a 10w30 or 10w40 in this 2.5 v6 that specs 5w30? I ask because I have a batch of MaxLife 10w40 with ARX in it ready to go and dont want to waste it. The contour guys say to add 6 quarts so I could add some 5w30 to the mix to thin it out some.

In your climate I doubt it would hurt a thing. If the car calls for 5w30, you can use 5, 10, or straight 30 in the summer. I'd stick to 5w30 in winter though. You can also add a quart of 5w-20 to thin out that 10w-40 if you like. I would personally try not to overfill though.

Actually overfilling (by half a quart or so) is highly recommended on the Contour. The 2.5 Duratech has a known oil starvation issue (occuring during high lateral g's) that may cause a spun bearing.

Yeah he's told me 6 quarts no matter what.

The 10w40 should be fine. I would mix it down 50/50 with some 10w30 Maxlife, or better yet if you can find it, some straight 30 Maxlife, just to thin it down some.

There is a member on here (don't remeber right now who) that had a Contour 2.5 V-6, and tried using Syntec 5W-50 in the engine, and said it ran really sluggishly with that oil, and went back to runing well with 5w30 in it. You might find the 10W-40 is too thick for that engine...just a head's up.....

I'm buying the car for sure so I'll check the glovebox manual asap and see if it lists different weights for climate or just the single 5w30. I'm thinking with 4ish quarts of 10w40 and 2 quarts 5w30 it would be fine during the texas summer.

Maybe better mix with 2 qts 5w20. I didn't think of that before because Maxlife 5w20 is hard to find, but you could use any brand for 2 qts. While 10w40 would work fine, I am just not a fan of going extra thick. Maxlife blend 10w30 performed wonderfully in my 460 V8 motorhome on a 5000 mile trip in 100+ F weather through AZ, UT, CO a couple years ago. I believe it (or a 10w40 5w20 mix) is up to the task you have at hand.
