Briggs & Stratton files for bankruptcy

Hopefully they are able to come out of bankruptcy a leaner and more efficient company, and not suffer the fate of their former competitor Tecumseh.

I have never had luck with B&S engines. Our 4WD Toro push mower lost near half its power in the two years I owned it and it leaked gas out of the gas tank that wasn’t replaceable. Growing up my family has never had good engines from them.

Wow. never thought I would see the day. I was a B&S dealer for 30 years (roughly). and along with Tecumseh were my favorite engines. Although the Japanese engines are excellent, I never went to factory school for them, and never became proficient in them. I am fully retired now, and all my ope has Tecumseh engines which I feel will probably last the rest of my gardening life. Of course, I guess they probably won't actually disappear, but may be more Chonda than Briggs.

I hate that B&S is having to file for bankruptcy protection. I have had a number of mowers with B&S engines. I never once had a problem out of their engines. I believe this event is a direct result of cheap Chinese imported engines.

Leveraged buyout from a private equity firm?

Anything of value will be gutted, all IP will be sold (the name alone will fetch a huge price), and it'll be liquidated in 5 years.

Yeah, they're the worst. Even the ones that want to act like they're running something for the long term are idiots that save money to lose money...

B&S would be my last choice, and I grew up close to their factory in Wauwatosa,Wi. ...let them go, poor quality.

It would not matter one way or the other. Even if they stayed under the same ownership or management they would be forced to move everything overseas or at least everything that has not already been moved. As with everything else Survival of the fittest.

Kawasaki and Honda ate their lunch, Tecumseh and Kohler were always better even back in the day.

I had better luck with B&S engines than with my current Honda 160 which is finicky about gas...The Tecumseh on my snowblower was very good too.

‘I give them six months.........

Our old craftsman mower with a Briggs bit the dust after 10 seasons of use and one oil change. Replaced it last year with a Troy bilt equivalent with a Briggs on that one. The "built in the USA" sticker on the engine was the big selling point and the fact that the same model with a Honda GCV engine was 100 bucks more.

Why only one oil change?
