What is the best lubricant for a Saturn with a manual transaxle? The orginal fluid is expensive stuff ($18 dollars per quart) that is supposed to last 100,000 miles, but it does not. Dextron III can be used. I was thinking about using a synthetic fluid that can replace Dextron III. What do you think?

Considering that a new Saturn manual transaxle would cost $2000 to replace, buying a couple quarts of the OEM fluid every 50,000 miles for $36 would seem like cheap insurance.

Anotherway to look at it is like this: If your car gets 30 MPG and gasoline costs $2 a gallon, you'd spend $3,333 on gasoline every 50,000 miles. An extra $36 on OEM transmission fluid every 50,000 miles is just a pocket change amount of additional expense.

malibu, you seem to not know about saturns much.

The factory fill on that saturn manual transmission is Dexron III ATF. It should actually last 100k miles as recommended(unless something is going wrong). Redline D4 ATF is an excellent product to dump in there and will keep the transmission safe and sound. Getting fluids like that from the dealer is not economical.

M1 ATF is also very good. Redline's D4 ATF is just a little more tailored to the application.

I'm with mkosem. If the factory fill is an ATF, I'd want to try some of the better ATFs available and Red Line would be the first on my list. Not sure which of their formulas? I'd e-mail them with the particular application in mind and see what they recommend.

However, if a given fluid seemed to produce motchy shifting, noise, etc ... I'd dump it ASAP and try something else! As Malibu pointed out, in the scheme of things even $10+ per quart fluids are awfully cheap.

they recommended the D4 ATF to me when I contacted them about a saturn manual transmission.

Hey there,

So alot of you use Mobil 1 in your manual
transaxle (FWD Transmission) ?
Just to make sure, is this the synthetic stuff ?

I am have a hard figuring out if I should stick
with Ford Mercon (Just plain ol MERCON) for a
93 Ford Tempo.

Goto the Mobil1 website and it will tell you if their Synthetic ATF is approved for use in your car...most likely it is. Yes, it is synthetic.

I just picked up 3 qts M1 ATF today to relieve the notchy-shifting problem with my 96 Saturn. Good luck!
