Got a new Camry. WIfe drives a lot, mostly long trips. Would the MC 5-20 or perhaps the new reformulated Havoline fill the bill. Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Congrats on the new Camry!

Is this a 2007 4 (5w20) or 6 cylinder (5w30)? Does it have an Oil Life Monitor? Would you consider Amsoil's lower cost group III synthetic? Meets your new car warranty requirements and warranted for a minimum 7500 miles or 6 months or longer if stated in your owners manual.

Go with Havoline/MC for 5k miles Both are great oils. No need for synthetic here.

MC 5w20 all the way!

It is a 4 cyl for the fuel economy. I have no problem with Amsoil, just would prefer the easy purchase of mainstream oils. thanks for the replies!

I just tried, for the first time, the new 5w30 Havoline DS.

After 700 miles, so far so very good in my girls 95 Avalon.
No consumption, smooth idle, easy to get, and pours with a greenish tint... pseudo GC anyone(:-)?

My only issue is the $$$... you can get a few nice oils in that price range for a 5k drain.

The Supertech synthetic is very close in price, and a good deal as well, but I just read an oil analysis that's making me think otherwise for the interval you suggest.

My local Sprawl Mart has the HDS listed at $10 but rings up at nearly $12... on a tangent, I saw High Milage HDS on the shelf as well.

I hear many raving about the MC oils & for the $ seems like my next choice when the Avalon is due up.

Talking about price, even at Walmarts there is a range of different prices for the same product. Yesterday I was the Havoline DS for 9.80 for 5 quarts, in my home town, Rome, Ga, it is 11.40. The MC oil looks like a really good deal. I am trying to decide probably between Havoline DS and the Motorcraft.

Flip a coin - both are very good. And so are Pennzoil and Castrol GTX. I prefer 4K with dino oils. Just a penchant for a longer lasting clear dipstick.

+1 on the Motorcraft 5W-20, for the money and quality.

Or try Pennzoil Platinum if you can get it on sale or BOGO.

Otherwise, any good dino SM/GF4 will work fine with reasonable oci's.

I use synthetics but, I would say Castrol GTX would be a good oil to use. After I use up ALOT of my synthetic stash, I am going to try GTX in my truck. At $5.99 on sale at Wally World, I just could not resist and bought 6 jugs! Well, I'll let you know how it goes when I get to it.

I have a quick question. I know the oil can handle the 5000 mile intervals but what about the oil filter? My car uses a cartridge type filter and was wondering if the 5000 miles is too much for it.

90Notch, i assume you are talking about your 2005 Mazda3? The cartridge filter will do just fine for much further than 5000 miles. If you are interested there is a spin-on filter adaptor made for your car, but personally i'd stick with the cartirdge. Just be sure to either change it yourself with the right tools or have the dealer do it.

The CoNoCo Semi-Synthetics @ $1 - $2 per quart oughta' be mentioned: Union 76 Super, Phillips TropArctic, etc.

Pick the one that is priced the best and change it every 5K. You will not go wrong with either one. I use synthetics but if I had to pick an off-the-shelf oil it would have to be Havoline becouse of it's avalibility and excellent UOAs.

But remember that the UOAs that we have seen were with the old oil.

With the new oil, we will have to wait and see if the "improvement" is good or bad...

I doubt if it will make a difference, the improvement was to make more $$.

I'm waiting to see what the new UOAs look like..
