Have a 2017 Q7 with 130k and an oil consumption problem, likely from carbon build up on the low tension rings. I'm on the 2nd run of Valvoline 5w30 Restore and protect, and it seems to be improving. After I'm done running R&P I would like to return to a 0w40 G504 oil. Previously I ran Mobil 1 euro, but I'm wondering if another oil would do a better job to prevent the carbon build up.

Audi had issues with those rings forever, while VW versions of those engines generally did better. You won't be able to fully prevent it, but you could slow it down.
You don't need 0W40.
1. 0W40 does not exist in VW 504.00 approval. VW 504.00 approvals are only 0W30 or 5W30. You can go Mobil1 ESP 0W30, which is a really good oil.
2. You could go to some boutique stuff. HPL Euro 5W30 would be a good choice.
3. Lower Noack oil would be desirable. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 is really good, clean oil with extremely low Noack. You could get on Amazon their Pennzoil patinum Euro 0W30 which is VW 504.00.

In addition to @edyvw suggestions, and you really wanted run an 0W-40, there is Mobil 1 ESP X4 0W-40 which is VW 511.00 rated. This is the "clean" equivalent of the VW 504.00 in the 40wt. Harder to find, probably more expensive, and would really not have any discernible advantage over the ESP 0W-30. That stuff is already almost a 40wt., has an HTHS of >3.5, and a Noack of 8.4 AND it's $28 a 5qt. jug at the Mart of Wal.

You're running the Valvoline Restore and Protect now and its working well l ike it is for most of us with the Q7. Why on earth would you go away from it just to go back and plug the rings back up again? I just done understand peoples reasoning to go away from it other than lock of common sense and think they " really need" a Euro oil. So many on the AudiWorld are having great success with Valvoline Restore and Protect dealing with freeing up the rings on the low tension ring pack along with seeing low wear metals on the UOA's. Better wear metals then all the Euro oils from those that have done them. The Euro oils are what caused the coked up rings in the first place, one guy just posted he ran Mobil 1 0-40 since 6,900 miles, did 3000 mile change intervals and still stuck the rings on his Audi Q3 and when it started gobbling oil at 80,000 miles.

Stick with the Valvoline Restore and Protect and change at 5-6000 mile intervals where we know it will go to from the UOA data on the tuned Q7s. Valvoline Restore and Protect is working in the Audis plain and simple. It'd be different if it wants doing well, but thats not the case at all.

G504 is the part identifier for the oil filter?

I am amazed by how many people are getting stuck ring CEL’s and the light goes away after VRP … 😷
I was never pessimistic about VRP bcs that’s a reputable company that was humble about the discovery - but some of what has been written by users is like a sermon from on high … Just checked - still no 40 …

3.0 V6. Was more than a quart every 1k miles.
That is a large amount. The most I've ever seen is somewhat over a quart in 500 miles.

Well not really, I have seen worse. There was this guy in college that carried a case of K-Mart oil in his trunk and had to stop on his way into school to add a quart - but that was a special case. He burned/lost/leaked a quart in about 50 miles.

I worked with a guy like that, only he lived about 10 minutes from work and had to add a quart a day. He drove a Dodge Omni and it smoked so bad that I’m surprised he got away with it for quite a while (and I’m surprised that the engine didn’t die). He finally got pulled over by the police and they impounded the car. 🫣

I think the joke would be on the impound lot in that case. I’d just let that vehicle go!

His leaked oil as well as burned it. The dude was a commuter to school and usually parked in the same spot on the street. You should have seen the pavement at that spot.

A couple Motul choices in 5W-30 vis. Pricey stuff though. Does Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 meet your specs? They have that in Walmart at a great price. You may want to check out the Valvoline Euro options also.
