The last 4 years or so I've been using a maintenance inhaler to control my asthma cause it starting getting bad. I moved a few months ago and noticed I haven't had hardly any issues and haven't used it for 3 weeks now. My new place has no carpet and no dogs. Although I do believe that dry cold weather will activate it. How come the doctors never bothered to figure out what causes It?

Most likely was the carpet and pets. My folks (both 88) recently moved from the house they build 64 years ago to an Assisted Living facility (been there for about 4 weeks) and found they both don't have the bad sniffles and morning congestion they always had before. Their old place had carpet (no pets). The new place has new carpet (four years old actually) and but pets are in the facility. I think it may be something similar. They had been to ALL the local doctors over the last few years with no real improvement until now.

Hope your improvement continues!

It's easier for them to give you medication and send you away...insurance companies push them to spend as little time as possible with patients.

I had the same problems until I got tested for allergies then they figured out the Asthma attacks were triggered by allergies.
Mine are so bad they need to be controlled with Xolair injections every 2 weeks, its a life saver.
Get tested for allergies.

I think our resident cleaning specialist SteveSRT8, had a couple posts over the years about properly maintained carpets and their function as a filter.

But from my personal experience, when they are not maintained/cleaned properly, they are ground for nasties.

I got less colds, even if i work now in a manufacturing facility where they use/vaporize machine oils + coolant, then my previous decade old carpet office place.....

right here^ it was mold for me, toxic.

Maybe your old place was outgassing some sort of chemical that irritated your lungs?

An old doctor once told me, that is why it’s called the “practice of medicine”. Good to hear your symptoms went away. Doctors cannot explain or investigate all symptoms or causes so the patient still bears some responsibility to better their health as they are able to.

Mine tested me for various allergies back in 2002. Found out I was allergic to dust mites living in bedding...not the carpet. That was fairly easy to fix. Have been totally off Asthma meds for 10 yrs. and got 90% of my mojo back. Those nasty mites lowered my lung function down to under 30%.

That's because their job is to listen to you long enough to decide what pills to prescribe. He/she has a list of symptoms and the associated pills that is updated by what's called "usual and customary practice" that gets modified by drug company salespeople and their promotions. They also have some general categories of pills for situations that are not covered by specific instructions.

Just remember pills don't fix problems, you do.

My first asthma doctor was a big believer in no carpet and no furry pets. Asthma is triggered by something. I have it. I know there is a strong seasonal correlation to my symptoms. The fall is worst for my asthma. It's getting worse as I get older.

#1 is overweight and once they get you on the dreadful advair what typically happens? weight gain.

Your immune system can play a big role. And part of that is diet. When I shifted my diet to many high immunity/anti-oxidant foods in 2009 my blood pressure dropped to normal and all my asthma signs finally went away...no need for meds. There's no reason not to optimize one's immunity with garlic and onions, green tea, coffee, cruciferous veggies, berries, and a host of other top foods. At the same time you have to cut out the junk foods and dead foods like breads, sweets, pasta's, most cereals, etc. No matter what the cause of one's asthma, a better functioning immune system can only help.

I was Advair for 7 yrs. I didn't gain any weight in that time...in fact I lost 30 lbs (250 to 220). Then in the 10 months before I stopped using all Asthma drugs, I lost 50 lbs (215 to 165). That was all triggered by a combination diet, exercise, water intake, and sleep. First time in my entire life I ever did most things right...while studying nutrition and health.

Great post 69GTX and congrats on your better health and weight loss. I need to get on that train.

Asthma is either related to allergies or dehydration. Your body gets chronically dehydrated to the point that your lungs start closing off alveoli to reduce the water lost to respiration, hence, you have an asthma attack. Drink a gallon or more of good clean water a day and if it's not allergies I'd be willing to bet your asthma "magically" cures itself without drugs.

I've realized for the last 30 years my asthma was initiated by old carpeting, not well maintained, and also by new carpeting still outgassing. Needless to say. I have mostly wood floors.

After being a junk food junkie for most of 50 yrs it took 2 changes to finally get me to react.

1. I was paying 100% for my own health insurance in 2009. So I started the ball rolling in 2008. That was lighting a fire under me.
2. I had more free time to read so started off on nutrition books my wife had. The more you know, the more you do. And the worse you'll feel if you relapse.

When I finally understood the science of how our body and food works, it made the transition a lot easier. Things like coating your endothelial cells with junk doesn't help for BP control and Nitric Oxide release. What they taught us in 7th to 10th grade health and biology classes was ok. But the nuts and bolts of true nutrition were never covered. I didn't think it was even possible to get back under 200 lbs again at age 54. Boy, was I ever wrong. I just had to use the proper tools and methods. And you have to use those tools for the rest of your life...no fad diets here.

Should add a 5th item for basic immunity control...adequate Vitamin D3, of which almost all of us are deficient presently. You cannot get an optimal amount from just food. Supplements or the sun's UVB rays are the only 2 choices imo. And the photo isomers from the sun are also beneficial and not well understood. You don't get those with supplements. I think that also helped with getting rid of my Asthma. I haven't had a real cold or flu in 9 years now...after getting sick multiple times every year for a decade... with bronchitis every year. Glad that's past.
