I'm looking for a local place that I can get oil for my lathe. It recommends an iso 68 machine oil (such as mobil dte heavy medium). However I can't find any place to get it. I do see that a couple of places sell iso 68 hydraulic oils. Are these the same?

If you go with it, I'd run it for a bit and see how it sounds.
If you hear any changes in noise , I'd try something else.

Oreilly's has this. 5 gallon bucket though.

HAH, I checked all the auto parts stores except Orielly. Although, still, I don't need that much.

I ended up just ordering the spec'd oil from McMaster Carr. I guess I'll just have to stare at the lathe for a few days and be patient

Thanks guys.

wouldn't a GL4 or GL5 work, if it's about 68 cst at 40°C? if the VI is igh, yo could likely go with a lower viscosity at 40°C as I remember from my days in school that those lathes run farly hot.

68 is a 68 machine oils are normally rust and oxidation inhibited, where a "plain" hydrualic oil would also be same BUT AW hydrualic will also have a anti wear property.
