Honda Odyclub Poll and Discussion Suggests That Amsoil ATF Better Than Redline D4 ATF?

I am not sure why but it appears that Honda OdyClub members favor Amsoil ATF over Redline D4 ATF as a replacement of the horrible Honda OEM ATF fluids available for Honda Odyssey years 99-2004.

Why is this? Do the FMs more closely resemble the Z-1's FM? Or is it simply better protection? On a thread at bobistheoilguy I read a post by someone who compared the specs of the Redline D4 vs Amsoil ATF and it appeared that in all but one category the Redline D4 had better numbers. I am now totally confused as to what type to use.

Thank you for any insight into this.

I use Amsoil with no ill effects in my Honda's. Don't know anything about Redline, however.

Also, the "horrible Honda OEM ATF fluids available for Honda Odyssey years 99-2004" is not the reason those transmissions failed. It was a design flaw. If it were the fluid, wouldn't ALL Honda's have suffered transmission failures?

This is interesting. Because i've always been told to ONLY put Honda's ATF in my Honda.

So to find people saying 'Honda's awful fluid' or 'i use Amsoil' seems foreign. Maybe my circles are misinformed?

I'd probably wait until there are more than 3 responders before reaching any conclusions.

Also, I wouldn't refer to DW-1, the new OEM fluid as horrible--it really hasn't been out long enough to know one way or the other. It's reasonable to think they improved it.

I think mainly because there is just a bit more usage of Amsoil ATF in Honda AT's than D4. Amsoil ATF works fine, despite what some folks have "warned" about Z-1 and mystical FM's. I have seen too many Hondas and happy Honda owners use Amsoil ATF to think otherwise.

I think the same goes for D4, but only from what I've read here never chatted with anyone running D4.

Agree = problems were of a design reliability type, not necessarily fluid choice.

Naah, sideshow bob calling it "Internet Snobbery".

Just like many endorsed boutique lubricants out there: factory Honda OEM ATF still works fine, provided that owner/operator observe sensible servicing intervals.

When it comes to ATF, I'm not overly concerned about it.So, whether "brand A" boutique lubricant is preferred over "brand B" boutique lubricant on certain automobile enthusiast board means nothing to me.

Again, my 2c's worth.

I guess one addition piece of insight--my opinion--is that reading that guys post is reminiscent of many posters on here; he hates OEM fluid, just based on the fact that it's OEM fluid...

I hear this time and time again. Many times it has some basis, but often times it doesn't. Discounting a fluid simply because it's OEM is as ridiculous as blindly using it simply because the manufacturer says to use it, IMO.

Both AMSOIL and REDLINE make great ATF's, I would go the direction of Asmoil for my choice just because they have been around, proven themselves and offer a great warranty on their products. If someone gave me some D4 I would use it. The bottom line is Honda OEM is fine, cheaper and is designed specifically for their cars. Keep that in mind too. If it is driving you crazy flip a coin or play rock paper scissors.

Redline, Amsoil, RoyalPurple, Amalie, DW1, Z1, ATF+4...... toss a coin. Surveys mean nothing.

Not to thread jack.

You think i should be doing the same for a 94? Its currently filled with that Honda Z-1 or whatever. It shifts super smooth for 150kn

mmmm... i need to visit to my old post to make sure i am not one.
honestly, BITOG is a very few special sites that actually tolerate posting on using after market fluids. i moved from Z1 to Maxlife, AMsoil and D4.. after lots of reading here. i don't hate Z1, but i am disappointed with it myself and want a change. i do agree that discounting a fluid just because it's a OE is a bad practice. i am sure Z1 is good choice for many many Honda applications, and i hope DW-1 will become a good choice for ALL Honda applications.

Are the shifts as smooth (or smoother) with Amsoil ATF compared to the Honda Z1 fluid ?

The 2001 Civic is also known for having a poor trans design, but on my mom's 2001 Civic I have already done 3 drain/refills for a total of 9 quarts and her car only has 50k miles.

I had use both AMsoil and Redline D4, really both are excellent fluid. i now reserve Amsoil stash for the TSX and Redline D4 for MDX, i cant compare because they have different engine and transmission/personality. i don't see differences between RL/AMsoil for civic, and probably Z1 is fine as well. what i felt more important is, as unDummy had mentioned many times in other threads, make sure you reset ECU/disconnect battery after filling with aftermarket fluid (yes, you must do). enjoy new ATF

I am using the Amsoil ATF and have been using it for the last 190,000 miles. I have a 1993 Civic with 310,000 miles on it. It has the original transmission.

Between my cars and family/friends vehicles we probably have 400K miles on Amsoil ATF. Longest drain was 85K on a Dodge Caravan trans. It broke in on the rebuilt trans, so 0-85K on the Amsoil and it was still cherry red, and just a little fuzz on the magnet. Shifts like butter.
Never tried Redline but if it's better than Honda fluid I would choose it over the OE fluid.

Color me red.......
