So I think the alternator has given up the ghost on my 2008 Honda Accord. Any recommendations for a replacement? I have Autozone, Advance Auto, NAPA and the dealer a choices. I'd like to make the repair this weekend so mail order will not be possible. Thanks in advance.

Might depend on how long you plan on keeping the car. If indefinitely, and the original lasted 11 years, get OEM from the dealer if you don't want to be replacing it again in a year or two.

Who was it on here that said their garage has better luck with new Chinese ones rather than rebuilt ones from auto parts stores? Was it Chris142?

How hard is it to pull? On my Camry it's right there. Probably would take longer at the parts counter than to pull, at least for my '99 (the '11 would probably take longer as I'd have to deal with the tensioner). Point being, if it's a simple job then you can tolerate replacing once or twice, and you could even do it in the parking lot at Autozone or wherever. But if it's an hour long job of cussin', then springing the extra coin starts to make sense.

Local rebuild shop if you can find one.

There is one outside of Albany around Guilderland if you live around Albany. I have used them.

Does the car / engine run ? If so , check the alternator output , at the alternator + and the alternator frame . Then at the battery . Report back .

Do it again with all the electrical accessories on .

If you have the mighty K24 (not sure) swapping the alternator is pretty easy. My only tip is to use a bungee cord to keep the belt taunt...

I used an O'Reilly reman on our 2006 TSX a few years back. So far so good.
I wish I woulds used a Denso reman. I think NAPA has them; maybe not. On line for sure. 2 days on Amazon...
There is a local rebuilder that could have done wonders on my original alternator...
AZ is probably about the same as my O'Reilly.
Like you, I was in a hurry.

The dealer probably has one for like $600 or more. Sheesh.

Good luck.

Used a Remy rebuilt from rockauto a few years in my 2000 Accord, so far so good. In my case the bad alternator triggered a CEL and that led to a erratic engine revs in highway speeds. After replacing the alternator the problem went away.

If you're trying to do this as cheaply as possible, I would wait and order online. You always get screwed on price when you are in a hurry.

I used a CarQuest (AAP) reman alt in the ex's Pilot a few years back. Had it tested in-store beforehand; still no issues. The woman who tested it came from A-Z previously and said that all the ones from there always failed soon out of the box.........

Ditto. The procedure from my 2008 CR-V was loading it with a carbon pile tester and making sure it could maintain at least 13.6 volts at the battery at 1000 RPM, if I recall correctly. Autozone's battery tester somehow deemed it "bad" when it was just the battery getting weak. I didn't have a carbon pile tester, so I settled for turning on all of the electrical items (headlights, foglights, rear defroster, A/C, radio, hazard lights, brake lights, wipers) and hooking up my trailer lights.

Advance Auto, their lifetime warranty model, paid online using a coupon code. You can usually get at least $25 off $100 or more (sometimes $40 off) with various codes online.

If it's in a difficult to reach area (I don't consider 1 hour all that difficult), pay the premium for the new OEM.

Duralast Gold alternator on my F150 for 3 years and almost 80,000 miles on it now.

Texas heat kills alternators. I think you'll be OK in New York.

All the parts store stuff will be the same. If you ask nicely, AAP can order from Worldpac(which they own) and get you a Denso. Otherwise, it's a crapshoot.

It doesn't matter if it's a rebuilt Denso, if it's rebuilt with junk voltage regulators like most of the ones on offer.

It costs about $5 for new brushes; if the VR is good, just replace them - it takes only a few minutes to open the case, clean it up, and do that. Any parts store should have them.

If the VR is bad, you are still better off buying a good one and replacing that than gambling on an AAP or OReillys Chimex piece of junk. Most decent sized 'villes will have a place stocking them.

Ended up getting one from NAPA - lifetime warranty. Pretty much the only place that had one in stock. Even the dealer didn't have one. Job is not that bad - the lower bolt is in a blind confined space so it was a bit difficult to break it loose. Other than that a pretty straightforward job with all the work from the top.

The dash light came on while the car was running. I followed the Honda diagnostic procedure in the shop manual and also tested voltage with a multi-meter. Voltage output was low.
