I really need to look into buying a car soon. In the past I've usually either known what I want (never anything under 20 years old) from the outset and bought the first halfway decent one I saw or just had some car fall into my lap. I've never really put much thought into buying a car before, but this time I need to be somewhat sensible.

I'm older than ever before now and have less free time than ever before so I think there would be some benefit to buying a new or newish car. I'll have to get a car loan (another first for me) this time so I think I'd do best to take some time instead of running out to buy the first thing I see.

Anyway, features that I want:
-small size, preferably low and short wheelbase, but not narrow like a motorcycle
-rear wheel drive
-steering wheel that isn't too [censored]ing far away!
-rack and pinion steering
-two doors
-power windows
-manual transmission
-simple controls for everything
-power disc brakes all around
-rated for fuel economy 14MPG combined or better with 30 MPG reasonably achievable in mixed driving
-not designed to turn into a pile of rust before it's properly broken in - no Nissan will be considered
-comfortable to rest upper arm along the top of the door (window open) with hand on A-pillar

Features that I ought to have even though I'd rather not have them:
-automatic transmission (sometimes I can't use my right arm)
-HID headlights because I am getting old and will eventually find them useful
-a trunk or cargo area large enough to fit a small human or large dog into comfortably
-plenty of headroom
-AWD

Features I'd like to have - shootin' for the moon here:
-a gasoline engine with plenty of low end grunt
-enough power to keep the wheels spinning until at 60MPH
-not white, black, or red
-ashtray

Things I'd like to avoid if doable:
-large rear seats. No rear seats would be even better
-electric throttle
-power steering
-top of roof is higher than my bottom ribs standing next to it
-ABS
-jiggly ride

Possible deal-killers:
-FWD
-Touch screen anything
-Volkswagen
-gas/electric hybrid
-a mushy ride
-rotbox
-steering wheel is hard to reach

Expected usage:
Most of the use of the vehicle would be for commuting. I have a 2 1/2 hour commute. The first half of the commute is stop and go with higher speeds, while the return trip is mostly sustained lower speeds. I almost never carry passengers as passengers tend to leave scratches, stains, cracks, dirt, and smashed interior parts and they complain too much.

My thoughts exactly, even before reading your post!

(Although it has a touch screen I think)

That's what first came to mind. I've heard good things about them.

A Subaru is the best choice for you as long as you can deal with their styling. They don't have the feel of most German cars, but they are not bad. ALL cars sold in the US for the last umptime years have power steering and brakes and most are switching to electric steering because it give better mpg and lower maintenance long term.

I think a most basic, lowest end BMW 3 series is what you'll have to go for. Or an older MB.

While the subaru brz is neat, it appears highly impractical to me.

Man, your list is so specific, I'm not sure there IS a car that meets all your criteria, some of which are mutually exclusive.

Mazda Miata?

His criteria suggests that he wants an impractical two-seater.

He wants a car with no rear seats. I don't think "practical" is high on his requirement list.

My list is not a list of "must be this and must not be that" both because such a car probably doesn't exist and also because if it did I might not be able to come up with the money for it. I'm looking for advice on cars to consider (both new and used) that actually exist. I will necessarily have to compromise.

What is your budget?

I am sure you know 2 door and RWD drastically reduces your choices. No Nissan will be considered leaves out the 300/350/370Z and G.

BRZ/FR-S
Miata
Mustang
Camaro
Challenger

Other RWD 2 doors
1 series
3 Series
Z4 Series
C Coupe
E Coupe
SLK
SL

I assume "Not a Volkswagen" includes Audi? If not maybe a TT-Q or A5-Q?

Ah, yes, um, I don't fit in a Z4. I forgot to mention that. Miata, Z3, yeah I can slide in there no problem. Z4, nope, too small.

The BRZ will be pushing it (but possibly doable and I definitely will want to try one on) unless things work out better than I expect.

Yes. No Audi. The TT also falls into the "I don't fit in it" category with the Z4.

You could get the base model Scion FR-S, it has buttons on the dash instead of the touch screen (touch screen is optional unlike the Subaru BRZ) and its the same body and engine as the Subaru BRZ. A 1 or 3 Series BMW would be a good option too, if you're looking to spend more than 25k.

Or maybe a Saturn Sky? Worth a look, sharp looking car imo.

I like the way you think. FR-S might well be a better BRZ for me, and while BMWs 1 and 3 are more expensive they open up the possibility of going with something that's newish instead of new should the car and price be right.

CTS-V Coupe then.

Have you looked into a Saturn Sky as a possible used car that would fit a reasonable budget? Although you might not fit, im 5' 1" and I fit comfortably in one on a test drive.

I haven't looked into anything yet. I'm a bit overwhelmed and thought to use you good people to give me a direction to start looking! That said, I probably do fit into a Sky quite easily assuming the interior is close to that of the Solstice. I'll be looking into both, now that you bring them up.
