Years ago AC Delco made a synthetic media oil filter that was rated down to 12 microns, they stated that wear was decreased by 75%.
The problem was that these oil filters were expensive so the GM parts counter stopped stocking them as well as the auto parts stores.
Rock Auto Parts has these oil filters for $10.70 each. I am wondering if AC Delco still makes these or are they just old oil filters that are scattered around the country. My local GM dealer said he can still get them.
The generic AC Delco oil filter was a PF35 and now goes by PF-1218 and is rated at 19 microns. In my old GM Performance Parts catalog it does not say at what percent it traps down to 12 microns.
The Amsoil EaO Oil Filter is 98% efficient at 15 microns and 50% efficient at 7 microns. I went through all of the old posts in the oil filter section here and it seems the most damage comes from particles 20 microns or bigger.
My El Camino has historic tags and I plan on doing yearly oil changes since I may only be driving the car between 5000 and 10,000 miles.
I think it was Terry Dyson who said he liked synthetic media oil filters if they were $10.00 or so.
Here are my oil filter choices with prices, that maybe a little bit off:
1) Amsoil EaO-27 which would be about $13.00, or $18.00 with no discount.
2) AC Delco PF35L which would be $10.70
3) AC PF-1218 which would be under $4.00 at Wal-Mart.
The guy at Rock Auto Parts said that the AC Delco PF35L Oil Filter has not been discontinued, he told me if it was it would show up on his computer.
My GM dealer qouted me a price of $14.00 for the PF35L, and when I said that's a little steep he said he could sell it to me for a discount, I will have to call him back and see how much of a discount.
