Back in November i bought a 93 Spirit for a daily driver.Peeling paint ,bad a/c,1 ding and 1 dent,great interior,76k miles,all for a grand.

Well I drove it for a few weeks and the head gasket blew.I got a fel-pro HG set ,substituted a Mopar Performance gasket.Picked up a timing belt, tensioner, water pump, oil, filter, antifreeze, thermostat, belts.Money problems prevented getting the work done till recently.

I got back in touch with a mechanic i've used in the past.He did the HG,water pump, fluids changed, drilled a bleed hole in the t-stat before installing it...all for 425$ w/90 day warranty.

He also showed me the old HG cylinder area 1-2 was scorched,2-3 was burnt,3-4 was burnt.Looked like a blow torch had been applied,up to a quarter inch of material was missing. Now when he first looked at the car he commented"looks like the head has already been off".He said when he took off the head bolts on 4 or 5 of them he used finger pressure to back them out!!!

So i was basically shelling out close to $600 because someone either reused stretched headbolts or did not torque them down properly.

He pointed out a couple of small problems that need to be taken care of in the future(bad motor mount, missing bushing on the alt mount). But he felt that the car was pretty good overall and should last for a while.

I drove the car a few days to get a feel of how it was performing, then I dropped the transmission pan.I replaced the filter, cleaned the pan and magnet(a little build up),refilled with atf+4.

I am happy to say the car is running good and I'm pretty happy. The Spirit should get better mpg than the Grand Marquis i have been driving.

Now to start the process of fixing/upgrading the car.

Torque wrench? Uh, what's a torque wrench? Never heard of it...

Enjoy the fuel savings. At this rate, it may pay for itself in no time.

In a chicken and egg thing, the head gasket could have compressed, making the bolts seem loose. Or the bolts loosened, blowing the gasket.

Just be proud of that tough american iron (aluminum?) not needing machine work on the head.

The alt bushings are a common problem on them. Many people flip them around from the front to back of the bracket, as they wear unevenly and that stretches the life out. You want this soon ish as it can throw belts from bad pulley alignment.

Do you plan on fixing A/C. I am wondering if that is even feasible given the age of the vehicle and given it probably had R-12 in it.

I'm happy with it.I'm 6-2, 290 lbs.I have a 30 mile one way drive to work. The seats are comfy and when i get to work my legs, hip and back are not numb.Unlike what has happened in some other cars i drove to work.
The 2.5 4 cylinder has good torque and cruises at 65-70 with no problems. The three speed automatic shifts smoothly. The ride is smooth, actually I think it is too soft.I think the shocks and struts need replacing as it seems to wallow around corners. From what i've heard the 5 speed cars are fun and can be surprising,
As a bonus a lot of these cars seem to have been bought by people who did not drive a lot.So it seems to be fairly easy to find one with low miles for a grand or two.

My brother has sentimental attachment to his Talon Tsi AWD Turbo. He spent megabucks on it recently but the A/C is been broken for years. If you manage to get the A/C working, please share your battle.

oh yeah,By the way while the mechanic had the engine apart....since this is an oil forum.NO SLUDGE!!!There was some blackened varnish on the cylinder head. The mechanic said that was evidence of past overheating.
