So I bought my F150 in October of last year from a local dealership as is, no warranty. You live and you learn. Truck worked fine, except it would have this vibration all the time. I brought it to my friend who has a mechanic shop, his findings were that you could grab the shaft coming out of the transmission and move it up an down, it had so much slack. Besides that, it shifted great, temp never went above 195 according to the dash. He replaced it with a Moveras transmission, 15k miles later and no trouble, the only thing that concerns me is the transmission temp. Going 80 mph itll go to 210, then go down to 208, then 206, and 204. 70-75 mph its 203-204. Just concerns me cause the old transmission never went above 195. He did replace the trans cooler when he replaced the transmission. I've read I could upgrade to a heavy duty trans cooler, is this possible? I'm undecided whether to keep the truck or not, I recently became an insurance adjuster and I'll be traveling alot, even with the 3.7 V6 its horrible on fuel, 15-17 mpg most of the time, but it is a crew cab 2wd. I'm considering a long bed Tacoma crew cab, 2016-2020.

That transmission has a thermal bypass valve where the cooler is bypassed until the fluid reaches a certain temp. The valve is internal to the transmission, if you drop the valve body to change out the lead frame the valve usually either falls on your face or goes into the fluid drain.

I don't think your looking at a big gas mileage increase with the Tacoma vs the F150. Even the smaller / midsize pickups get pretty bad gas mileage. Guess it would depend on how much it costs to swap trucks, as to whether that switch is justified.

Just a thought...if you are and indy adjuster incorporate and write off all the travel expense. Second thought, not sure where you live but insurance adjusters are often running around all over all day. Lot's of mileage. I HATE Prius (truth told my girlfriend has one; I've ridden in it 1x) but it would seem appropriate. Camry also comes to mind :)

This.

I have a 2007 Tacoma PreRunner 4.0 V6, and I get what he‘s getting in the F-150. Usually 16 MPG on a daily commute that’s 36 miles round-trip, all freeway except for about 4 miles of it. Granted, I drive pretty fast. Usually between 65-85 mph.

The new Tacos have the newer 2GR-FKS 3.5 V6 with the 6-speed auto instead of the 5-speed auto I have (6MT also available). They might get 1-3 MPG better than the 4.0, which still ain’t good for a midsized pickup.

The 3.5 is also widely criticized for not having much low-end/midrange, compared to the 4.0. And people say the 6-speed auto likes to hunt for gears.

I think if I were to buy one, I’d go 6MT. I think it would be a better match for that engine; would be easier to keep it in the meat of the powerband.

Your transmission could have been fixed instead of replaced, U-joint failures will beat the Case/Output bearing to death. The Thermostat "Pill/Element" could be slightly different. 210 isn't hot.
