I am currently using blaines farm and fleet 5w20 full synthetic with a pure one oil filter. My 2014 Jeep patriot has a oil monitor light that comes on when it needs to be changed. Should I go off mileage or off of the indicator light? Also any oil/oil filter suggestions for a Jeep patriot.

I always change oil by mileage, which I average nearly 1K per vehicle - per month. Right around 6K OCIs.
I trust similar Fram Tough Guards and Wix oil filters, over anything named Purolator.

Currently I am running Fram Extra Guard and K&N Gold in my GMs. One likes filters that flow well - other likes any brand and model number.

Is your oil monitor light set at a specific mileage or does it factor in other variables in Connection with your use?
Also what does your manual say about when to change?
It's hard to answer without more information. What is your driving style? Mixed city highway or mostly city or mostly highway?

Most oil monitors are also set for time intervals. Like 1 year OR 5K miles.

I would feel more than comfortable with a 6K OCI in Wizconson I'd make sure I made it in Oct/April. I've use the Purolator filters off and on for 10 years now and still have a supply in my stash. Never found a Tearolator.

My Jeep didn't come with a manual, so I had to download one. In the manual it states that it monitors your driving habits and goes based on that. I would lean more toward severe service due to mixed city and highway driving. All the manual states is not to go beyond 10k for oil changes.

I still run purolators from time to time. I've cut open a few purolators and have not found any tears in the media. I think every oil filter manufacturer has had design flaws that needed correction in times past. I had a fram leak on me once and it was not due to being under torqued or having the old gasket on it was for one of my Hondas that had the filter horizontally mounted. I think there was a filter recall at the time due to faulty gaskets that were too thin. Fram is a good filter but they still have had issues like many other brands.

In your cases, for me personally I'd change my oil at every 7500 or the service light (which ever comes first) Going by what you just said.

Yeah I've never had an issue with puro either. Never a tear or anything. Once the media was a little brittle in a 10 year old filter but no tears or anything like that.
Never had an issue with any filter or any brand actually unless it was before I started opening them and never knew

K. That's a pretty big step for me due to the fact I've been doing 3k oil changes in every vehicle I've owned. I may have to start with 5k and work my way up lol

I totally understand lol. Up until 2013 I put 10w40 in everything I ever owned and changed it every 3k just because that's how we always do it growing up.
It wasn't easy to accept change

Same here. I had always been a believer in the 3 month / 3,000 mile OCI. But after becoming a BITOGer, I was able to work my way up to 5,000 mile OCIs.
Now using synth oil, I do 7,500 mile OCI with a Fram Ultra for 2 OCIs.

I even got over my fear of generic oil and just put Surer Tech high mileage full synth in our Civic.

My Jeep is under warranty so unfortunately I don't think I can use a filter for two oil changes although I wish I could. I think on the receipts that I keep they need the oil and the filter mileage etc...when. I did the oil change. also I never had to change spark plugs every 30k and I need to do that to keep my warranty.

The OLM should recognize severe-service and adjust accordingly. In any case the real question isn't whether you should trust the OLM but whether you trust FCA/Chrysler has your interests in mind when they set the parameters for the OLM. I would peruse the UOA sections for your vehicle/engine to get an idea of what sort of interval is working.

BMWturbodzl has my opinion as well. Check out some used oil analysis' and see what they typically look like. Use a good filter and a good synthetic and follow the iolm based on what you find in the uoa section. Younlikely only need to change the oil once a year and every 10k miles (unless notified earlier) in order to satisfy your warranty if applicable.

Have you ever taken apart a used Purolator oil filter and shown them on the Oil Filters board? Pictures-proof, for Purolator needs backers on this board, that once was full of Purolator lovers over 10 years ago. I have 14-15 years of memories vested here. About to hit 10K in posts.

NAPA has decent inexpensive UOA kits, also Rock Auto sometimes has them. Go for the TBN, I would stick with the Blain's (Citgo made) synthetic, see if it can handle 7500 miles. I'm a big Blain's fan myself, I pick up a 5 gallon pail of Mystik JT-8 10W30 for the diesels anytime I'm near one. If they could just build one less than 250 miles away...

We don't know your drive cycle, but if it was my Patriot, I would go 5000 miles, or oil change light, whichever comes first.
Cold weather, short tripping, is really hard on oil.
Had a 2008 2.2L Cobalt sludge up badly at 3,000 miles with PP 5w30, OE filter.
Collapsed the oil filter cartridge.
Short trips, cold weather. Engine was fine, 60k miles with no coolant use.
