We had to do a 120 mile round trip this morning. The air conditioner was performing fine for the first 30 mile leg. We were running around 75 mph. All of the sudden, it started blowing warm air. It did this until we got to a stop sign on the off ramp. As we came to a stop, it started blowing cold again. It blew cold for the entire 60 mile trip home. It's not the cabin air filter. It's a new Mann replacement.
What could be the problem?

Sounds like the EVAP temporarily froze. The next question is if it's not a leak how does VW keep that from happening and why it failed. Clogged drain? Temp sensor? TXV failure?

I'm taking it to an independent shop in the morning. They have a R1234yf machine.
There were no codes related to the air conditioning system.
The coolant temperature never changed.
This event might be my excuse to trade for a Ford or Toyota. I'll never buy another vehicle where the nearest dealership is 60+ miles away.

I've been reading reports of failing EVAP coils on BMW models of this vintage. They're R1234yf as well.

I find it odd that it would suddenly begin cooling again.
DId.you turn off the AC or keep it running? If you kept it running then perhaps it's a compressor issue where it's not cycling on as it should. If you turned it off and then back on perhaps the ice on the EVAP coil melted. I had an icing problem with my 435i. It happened twice where on low fan speed and at 70 degrees it would ice up on the highway but if I raised the temp to 72 or higher it wouldn't ice. My solution was to turn off the AC and crack the sunroof which would allow the ice to melt fairly quickly.

I'm not sure. My wife was over there mashing buttons. We kept the fan speed on high. After it started cooling, I put it in manual mode. I instructed her to never use the automatic mode again.

I'm thinking that it may be a switch. A high pressure or low pressure switch.
I suppose that I will find out tomorrow.

Update:
It was low on refrigerant. One Schrader valve was found to be leaking. Both Schrader valves were replaced and refrigerant was fill to specifications.
