starting to look at tires for wife's car, tread is at 4/32 so have a little time.

Dealer quotes me the same size as came originally with the car P205/70r16-several brands here.

My local tire shop is suggesting a more common and cheaper 215/65r16. He says it's a little wider but about same diameter.

What say you? i'm thinking original size for the snow here in the midwest.

Personally, I would stay with the stock size. The size the local tire shop is recommending will most likely work. It is wider, and a little smaller diameter, but overall only about 1% different. But the price difference between the two sizes is very little. Usually, when a tire shop suggests a slightly different size, that is what they have in stock at that moment and they want to make a quick on-the-spot sale.
