Anyone out there have a 2005 - 06 Chevy Equinox? We bought one last month, with 38,000 km on it. Very pleased with it, but there is a rattle or vibration in the steering column when going bumps at low speed. Took a look at a u-joint (?) on the upper steering colomn under the dash, seems loose. When turning the steering wheel either direction then letting it return to straight position produces a "knock" in that area. Anyone heard of this or have an idea as to what's going on? Also, are ball joints on these vehicles "lubed for life"? The boots on all of them look empty, but I'm used to the old style with the zerks. This could also be the reason for the noise I'm hearing going over bumps. How are "lubed for life" ball joints supposed to look like?

Not a recall. I'd need your VIN to be sure though. You can send it to me in a message or on here and I'll check for you.

I had a local dealership check on a possible recall, nothing came up. Thanks for the advice. I might take it in for a semi-annual inspection which includes checking out the steering and suspension, will tell them about the noise, but to me it's definitely in the steering column.
Are pre-lubed ball joints supposed to look like their empty? Comparing them to my Silverado's joints with greaseable zerks is like night and day. As my original post asks, what are "lubed for life" ball joints suppose to look like? Soft and plump or not?
