Alright , my love affair with GC is over as the wife's new car calls for 5-20 or 0-20. Guys rack your brains and tell me what you think about the new oils. TO be honest with some of the weak adds we see I sort of scared of the new oils. Thought about either PP or Motorcraft 5-20, heck even thought of Mobil 1.
thanks in advance
Greg Harrison

Do you want economy or longevity? all 3 of those oils are great. MC is the cheapest and probably has the shortest OCI abilities. PP protects just as good as mobil1, is cheaper (under $4 at wal-mart), but hasnt really shown any use past 7,500 mile OCIs. Mobil1 is the most expensive, but would be recommended for any OCI over 7,500, i'm guessing.

badtlc,
forgot to mention I am limited to 5k miles on oil changes but would still like to use an oil equ. to the GC is was using on her 2002 Camry if possible, of course can't spend 7 bucks a quart so I guess I should have added this info also

If thats the case, IMO (which doesnt mean much since i'm a noob around here) then I wouldnt consider mobil1, but maybe mobil 5000? I'm getting ready to use PP 5w-20 in both of my mazdas which were running MC 5w20. The MC is a great oil and the UOAs show that, but I wanted some extra protection against city driving so I went with PP.

As for whether or not PP protects as well as GC, i dont really know. I do know that the PP wear numbers are always really low and I would have a hard time thinking that GC would produce significantly better numbers.

With you limiting to 5k OCIs, you have every reason to just pick the oil that makes you feel the most comfortable. It really shouldnt matter in your situation.

If you are "limited" to 5,000 mile OCI's, almost any brand of 0w20,5w20 will do. Buy on price/sale. Here are some likely suspects, in no particular order.

Havoline, Exxonmobil Superflo,Chevron Supreme, Pennsoil, Castrol, Motorcraft,Mobil (other than Mobil One)

At least you can go back to something thicker like GC once your warranty has expired or now if you don't care about it.

Thin oils help car companies to offset CAFE penalties.

Thanks for the info guys. Ken2 I had forgotten completely about Schaeffers. We on this board have taken an inexplicable swerve away form this line of oils for some reason. I will check on this for sure. What makes this oil better than the others?
THanks
GregH

Castrol Syntec makes 5w20...or PP 5w20. They are both about the same price point. Not many UOA's on the Syntec, but the PP looks good.

If you go with an oil that is not 100% synthetic I would use MotorCraft 5W20. I think highly of Redline Synthetic 5W20 based on what I have seen in older Toyota's. I am sure that Mobil-1 and Amsoil 5W20's will also do just fine. You might see if you can find any UOA of Havoline 5W20. Havoline usualy puts out a quality product at an excellent price.

At 5,000 mile oil changes I would run a petro oil . The Toyota will last a long as needed with 5,000 mile oil changes. Usually syn.oils at 5,000 mile oil changes are a waste of money with no benefits. Now if you go 10,000 mile oil changes the syn oil $$$ can be justified by eliminating an oil change. What about trans services .

No one will care if you run the GC, 0w30 which is an excellent product and brackets the 5w-20 recommendation. FWIW,I'd certainly run the Amsoil Series 2000 0w30 in this application over their 5w-20 syn.

An oil analysis will show that the GC, 0w30 works perfectly in this motor. The only downside is that a thicker, ACEA A3/B4 rated 30wt will cost you about 2% in fuel efficiency, compared to a much thinner 5w-20. Of course, that's also about the only reason why Toyota now specs 5w-20 instead of 5w30 or 10w30.
