Looking for information from someone who swims frequently in a public swimming pool. I'm 81 and am in an Aqua aerobics class. We met three times a week for a vigorous 50 minute class. The pool is doped with a goodly amount of chemicals which drys the skin. What do you frequent swimmers use for your dry skin or what else might I do to alleviate this condition? Thanks so much. It's the chlorine. As a lifeguard in a previous life I can suggest to shower well with soap afterwards and then moisturize. Had several female lifeguards that swore by putting conditioner in their hair after swimming.

The chlorine will also dry out and bleach your hair, but I always like the bleached summer hair look! It turns mine a golden blonde :^)

I'm an older guy and have skin problems. I find that ocean swimming is much better than pool activities. I simply rinse the salt off when done and feel great.

A quick search on google reveals the capitalists are on the case

(Scroll a bit … the product is not at the top) …

I will increase my after pool "quick" shower to a longer time and follow that up with some moisturizer. The Walmart stuff would get me tossed out of the pool because we are supposed to shower before entering the pool to remove any dead skin, hair stuff, body oil etc. Thanks for the reply's. Ed

The biggest problem is chlorine. You really can't wash it off with soap. The chlorine turns the oils in your skin into soap. That's why chlorine dries out your skin so much. If possible, find a saline pool or a freshwater pool that uses a chlorine-free alternative like colloidal silver for sanitizing the water. Almost all public pools do use at least some chlorine. Before going into the water, apply a chlorine barrier product:

Someone already mentioned a Vitamin C based product to neutralize chlorine on your skin after you get out of the pool. You can also dissolve a tablespoon of ascorbic acid in a quart of water and apply the mixture with a squirt bottle to your body after swimming.
