Hey folks,

New member here. Just looking for some feedback on my how my internals look. 2008 Lexus GS350 with 180K. Bought used at 50k miles and runs exclusively on QSUD at 5k intervals. I believe this model (2GR-FSE) suffers from bad piston ring design. It burns 1-2 quarts between changes (definitely atleast 1), however the dealer did mention the valve cover gaskets were leaking so I guess that attributes to a tiny bit of it. All general maintenance is done by me and has a pretty new PCV valve. Just got the valve cover gaskets changed yesterday and here are just 2 pics my mechanic took for me, unfortunately that's all he got and theyre not the best. Looks pretty clean in my opinion. Should I keep on doing what I'm doing?

That's very funny were are the QSUD haters that rant and rave about Quaker State being the sludger oil supreme?

Nice and clean but any full synthetic with 5k oci's would give these results. Waste of good oil imo. You could do at least 7.5k and then some. In fact if you're topping up at least 1qt. every 5k then 10k is very doable.

When I had the valve cover off the 2.4 in my 05 Accord, the cam lobes looked just like that. They felt smooth and I attributed to more of a burnishing of the metal then actual wear.

I love it! My wife's 07 Avalon has a very close relative 2GR engine. I've never had the covers off, but you can see a fair amount through the filler, especially with a flashlight and some effort (yes, I suffer from OCD -- oil compulsive disorder). Ours got some GC 0w-30 early on, an has been on annual fills of M-1EP 5w30 for the last several years. Even at this age (now 12 years), the car has only 70k miles -- lots of short tripping.

All you can see inside on ours is clean, bare metal -- like the first day we took it home. Just what the doctor ordered for a bad case of OCD.

Just pure theory, but I suspect that after experiencing the burn from its sludge-vulnerable MZ series, Toyota was very careful to make sure its replacement, this engine series (the xGR engines) would run very clean.

How can you tell from a picture and not running a finger nail across the lobes?
