ON, Canada eh?
So there has been lock picking folks going around the neighbourhood that haven't been caught yet and 2 houses have been broken into recently so this got me thinking on a strategy to beef up security at my place.

The door strike plate and deadbolt hole in the door jamb is reinforced with a steel plate and long sheer resistant screws along with long screws on the hinge side making kicking the door in a non-issue.

I was thinking of maybe coming up with a remote controlled solenoid that would move in place of the thumb-turn on the back side of the door when it's in the locked position and prevent the door lock from turning because the thumb-turn wouldn't be able to turn thus not allowing the deadbolt to slide away. Then I thought maybe a mag-lock or slide bolt on a linear actuator as a secondary to the deadbolt but I'm not sure what would be best and thought maybe you had some ideas?

I would change the deadbolt to a non-pickable Abloy for example but they are really expensive and I think I can accomplish one of the above at a much less of a cost.

Thoughts?

By the time you buy all the pieces to install a remote control maglock or electric deadbolt, I think you'd be over the cost of a decent Medeco or Mul-T-Lock deadbolt. Plus you have to deal with the possibility of power outage or failure.

Power failure is no problem. I have a large UPS in the basement for my server that can easily feed the DC voltage adapter for days if it had to. But what is the chances a lock picker would be there at the exact time of a power failure anyway. We've lost power maybe once in 6 years at this address.

I can buy a Mag lock kit with remotes on Amazon for $130 Canadian ($100 USD). The quote for the UL grade unpickable locks was twice to 3 times that depending on the brand.

Houses aren't very secure and when you have pro criminal governments not much happens to criminals.

Tell me about it. Slap on the wrist here.

I found that one on Amazon.com and clicked to see if they would import into Canada and they will with duty fees (low anyway) and with conversion it's less expensive than here for 2 locks (Front/Back Door).
So I might go this route. Thanks for the suggestion, I wouldn't have considered Amazon.com

One downside to the high security locks is obtaining duplicate keys and rekeys. If you buy locally, only that locksmith is going to have access to that keyway, so if they go of business you're stuck. Same issue with buying online. My advice is buy as many keys as you'll think you're ever going to need when you buy the locks...and don't lose them!

This comes with the authorization card so as long as I can find a locksmith that does this same kind of lock and present my card it should be easy no?

I do but police don't care unless it's a break and enter and in which case they are just concerned of writing the report for insurance. I've complained and provided pics and video to my local PD of the idiots that pull on the door handles of the cars at night and the one night they got into the neighbours car in our shared driveway because they left their door unlocked accidentally and they did nothing.

I would just get a high security deadbolt such as medeco/mul t lock on all entrances. Other than that, improve exterior lighting. The crooks will move on to the next house that is easier pickings.

Day light robbing when no one was at home, casing the joints prior I guess to learn patterns.

There are no such thing as unpickable locks. If was created on this planet by human hands, it can be picked.

Just get any security lock, put up cameras and get a dog. Once they see that key way they will move on to the next mark.
