A couple of cut ups on an Advance Auto AA2 (fits most Ford Modular V-8's). This one was in a taped up box, which was left by my BIL when he left my Sister. I think a Motorcraft is much better constructed. The CarQuest filters, I gave to my FIL, as they were made by WIX.

I did not count the pleats, but it does seem to be well made, although there is a lot of spray over on the base with the total grip paint.

I don't have a clue what the black smears are on the top and bottom cans are.

I will stick with MotorCraft/CarQuest/Wix/Purolators.

Just my .02

Probably some sloppy work with the potting material they use to attach the pleats to the metal end caps.

Yeah, I don't like the pleats either ... they are going minimum on the number of pleats it seems. If those pleats were in an Ecore, it would be a recipe for a media blow-out.

I was doing some Oil filter disecting tonite too. I cut up a used Purolator classic, that came off my Dodge. It had that black crud on the bottom too. I could scrape it off with my fingernail. I thought it was sludge and I ripped the filter apart to check the pleats, they were clean. I see now that it is some sort of manufacturing crud that Purolator used. How about that by-pass valve on the bottom of the filter. I couldnt open mine with a bolt prying on it. That by-pass sucks, if the filter ever blocked that thing is worthless, it wouldnt open but a couple mm's with a screwdriver. I cut open a used Champ though and as much as the Purolator made me mad, those E-cores are garbage. My pleats on the name brand Purolator was much tighter and the string was impossible to break by hand.

The strings and I think the oblong holes are long gone. Was that a Classic or a Premium Plus? Can't say which is the better filter, but they aren't the same.
