Jeep 4.0 sounds like Mercedes diesel at idle

Thanks for your responses. I am fairly confident oil presssure is not the issue. When I first went to buy it, the gauge would read between 10-15 psi at idle, often hitting 10, after just 5 minutes of driving. I suspected the sending unit was bad. I put a mechanical gauge on it and it was...

Jeep 4.0 sounds like Mercedes diesel at idle

Hey all, I have a 97 XJ with 220,000 miles. I bought it at 184,000. I first used the Farm & Ranch stores MAG1 10w-30 with Auto-RX through two clean & rinse cycles, changed the head gasket and resealed the bottom end, and then used Shell Rotella T5 10w-30 twice at short intervals. I wanted to...

Use loctite when it is not called for?

In Florida rust may not be much of an issue. Many people use anti-seize to keep joints from rusting together. Blue loc-tite is popular in the West on 4x4 vehicles because it helps with things vibrating loose on all the unpaved roads and also helps with rust and corrosion. On something like...

    Valvoline 5W-30, 7930 mi, 2003 Xterra - potassium?

At such low levels of potassium its highly probable that you would not notice any coolant loss. Hundreds or thousands of ppm you are more likely to notice. On vehicles I've owned when its over 10 ppm something is ultimately wrong. When it gets to 25-50 ppm I start planning the repair.

    01 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 engine, Rotella T6 5W40

Don, I have been using synthetic HDEO 5w-40/15w-40 or 10w-40 oil in my 2001 Jeep Cherokee for 218,000 miles. The original owner used Mobil 1 10w-30 for the first 42,000 miles. Between 100,000-160,000 miles I used Castrol GC 0w-30. My oil changes have been between 9,000-20,000 miles, average...

Castrol 0w30 or Shell 5w40 any good?

You may find some BITOG folks willing to buy the GC 0w-30 from you. Where are you located?

    what about a jeep cherokee

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee with 261,000 miles. It has been the best, most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I bought it used from a guy I knew who bought it new. Other than needing oil changes, greasing the suspension, front pads and rotors, shocks, spark plugs, tires and a battery here and...

Mobil 1 0w-40 vs German Castrol GC 0w-30

JAG, I appreciate the link. One thing of interest was the difference measured between the first and second tests of the Gold GC. 17.5% vs 22%. I wonder what M1 0w-40 would have done by comparison. I had a 1987 Mercedes and ran Mobil 1 0w-40 and LubroMoly 0w-40 a time or two. I found that 5w-40...

Mobil 1 0w-40 vs German Castrol GC 0w-30

JAG, I am wondering how you determined the GC 0w-30 was more volatile than the M1 0w-40. Thanks, Brian

Mobil 1 0w-40 vs German Castrol GC 0w-30

Gary, I wasn't looking towards the 0w-40 because it was touted as a 40 weight. I was looking at it because it met the A4/B4 specs. Generally anything A4/B4 will stay on the higher side of a 30 weight oil and at least be rated 30 weight or 40 weight. I was considering returning the Mobil 1...

Mobil 1 0w-40 vs German Castrol GC 0w-30

Gary, One difference is that Mobil 1 0w-40 is formulated in order to meet the A4/B4 specs which mandate a higher HT/HS. GC 0w-30 also meets the A4/B4 specs. Brian

Mobil 1 0w-40 vs German Castrol GC 0w-30

I am comparing these two oils and cannot find a thread that already summarizes the differences. From what I have read they are comparable. In my experience GC 0w-30 is shear stable. It makes it 10,000 miles in my Jeep 4.0 and stays in grade. I have read that Mobil 1 0w-40 shears down until it is...

looking for a good HDEO 5w-30

There are several HDEO 0w-30/5w-30 oils but none are off the shelf. BP-Castrol makes a 5w-30 also, I believe its called Exilium, or something similar. -brian

    Jeep 4.0L: trying AutoRX

You might have another problem. These Jeeps sometimes have problems with the exhaust valves, exhaust valve guides, and exhaust valve seats. Mine had an intermittent rough idle and a compression test showed #1 and #6 at 50 and 85 pounds respectively. When the head was pulled all exhaust valve...

looking for a good HDEO 5w-30

Off the shelf options are limited for a 5w-30 HDEO. I would use a 5w-40 so you get good protection for the cold winters and hot (desert) summers. I use either 5w-40 or a thick 0w-30 in my Jeep 4.0. Why not try the 5w-40 once and see if the fuel economy changes? Short of that I would just stay...

    Mobil 1 10w-30 or Mobil 1 0w-40

My first pick is Truck & SUV 5w-40 but its not easily available. If I was going to stay with Mobil 1, should I switch to their 10w-30 or their 0w-40. I use it in gas engines that like xw-30 or xw-40. Regards, Brian
