    Lower Thermost Temp

I have the NA. I bought the larger stat for the lower rad hose, not the small one for the cvt. I bought the Calorstat.

    Lower Thermost Temp

My Forester doesn’t have a temp gauge, just dummy cold/overheated lights. I’m using an OBD scanner for that number. I paid a little more attention today and after 195, 199.4 stuck around for a long time I the highway. Not sure how accurate that is either though.

    Lower Thermost Temp

Not trying to gain anything, just bought the wrong spec and it isn’t worth returning cost wise. The heat is warm, and the cold dummy light goes off, at around 95F. It seems like 195 is the spot where the temp hovers for a while, so I’m guessing that’s where the stat opens? At any rate, I think...

    Lower Thermost Temp

Hi Everyone, I’m getting ready to perform my first coolant change on a 2015 Subaru Forester with about 130k. I bought a new thermostat to replace the original (which is still operating normally). I realized that the one I purchased on RockAuto opens at 188F, while the OE temp is 192. Will this...

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

Hadn’t really considered the hammer blows, but yeah, those probably helped quite a bit.

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

Probably would’ve been, with much less day-after shoulder pain. I bought screw extractors, a propane torch, a can of liquid wrench, some anti-seize, some socket adapters, and I’m sure more that I can’t think of, for what should’ve been a simple job. At least I have that stuff now. I’ll save the...

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

So I figured that I’d just buy a new cover and gasket at this point, and go that route. But the rear Diff cover on Subarus has mounting bolts that go through the crossmember, which means I’d have to drop the diff a bit to remove the cover, which could be a huge pita. So I figured I’d give it a...

Yeah, I think I’m back to this

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

Ah, I see what you mean. If the bolt breaks off in the Diff housing it’s a high pita

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

Well, I haven’t done anything else yet. I haven’t even had time to swing by the shop and see if they could break it free for me. I’m just curious though, what kind of damage are we talking? Couldn’t I just replace any broken bolts? (I really don’t know)

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

Yeah, I’m not sure how much of the liquid wrench is getting in there. Probably not much. But it couldn’t hurt, I guess. Would you recommend drilling into the plug while it’s hot? I have a little butane torch that probably isn’t as hot as a proper propane torch. Would that do the job?

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

I’m glad the wrist is feeling good. Sounds like a heck of a journey. I would like to hammer in an oversize bit but the chassis is in the way and I really can’t get a good swing on the fill plug, especially laying on the ground. If I can get it out, I’m not even messing around with the drain...

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

I figured the 20 degree weather we’ve been having at nights would do the job, but apparently not. 🤷

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

So I’ve decided to got the patient route for now. Picked up some liquid wrench and I spray that on there a couple of times a day. I also picked up a heat gun at harbor freight and I’ll try hitting the plugs with that a few times over over the next few days. Then I’ll see if I can use the bolt...

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

Would an impact driver with the hex bit do it? That I have.

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

This is an interesting idea.if I were to do this, would I use a liquid gasket product to seal the plug? Or is that not really necessary on a fill plug? I picked up some bolt extractors today to try it that way, but in an effort to save time (and make the wife happy) I’m going to swing by the...

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

No pics as of now, I’ll try to take some tomorrow. I was turning to the left, that much I am sure of. As for vise grips, it’s an internal hex drive bolt, so there really isn’t anything to grab on to. People keep suggesting propane so I may have to look into that.

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

Thanks. I’ve heard from other subie owners that they put a factory thread locker on there. This is, apparently, a relatively common problem for those folks who wait more than a couple of years to change the differential oil.

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

I did buy it new. I feel like I’ve maintained everything else, but honestly I was only sort of vaguely aware that the differential oil needed to be changed. I’ve only previously owned commuter sedans that did not get the workout that the Forester does, so it wasn’t on my radar. Thanks for all...

    Differential Plug Stuck, Stripped

I wrote earlier in the thread that if I couldn’t get the fill plug out, I’d drill and tap a new fill hole.
