Why are OEM tires so bad?

We charge $85 for the mount and balance in order to be somewhat competitive with the Big Brands and America's Tires of the world. Most tires are done by lube techs who are still paid double minimum because they have their own tools. It is more of a loss leader in order to upsell work that pays...

Why are OEM tires so bad?

That is a program run by a company called Dealer Tire who handles tire distribution for multiple car lines. We use them for Mazda. Basically you have to sell 3 at regular price and the 4th for a dollar. Then the dealer has to submit the RO to Dealer Tire who reimburses the dealer the cost on...

Why are OEM tires so bad?

At that point we are still losing money. Techs have to be paid double minimum wage in California if they supply their own tools, which in our county makes it around $32/hr. Our normal door rate is $210/hr so we are technically also losing out there.

Why are OEM tires so bad?

The factory Pirelli P-Zero tires on my Mustang, along with the 2 replacement sets I have put on there have the Mercedes "MO" symbol on them. They are being replaced with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S once they get down the wear bars.

Why are OEM tires so bad?

Please don't judge me for what I am going to say, I'm just the parts guy, but the main reason that dealers sell tires is for the inevitable upsells and then customers coming back for rotations to get more upsells. There is minimal profit in tires, like a set of 4 that retail for $300/ea might...

Why are OEM tires so bad?

We sell a lot of tires. So many people just drop their vehicle off in service and say "put the same ones on" that we mostly stock the replacement factory fit tire. Also the vast majority of the calls we get for tires are people asking for the same thing. Now our volume is nowhere near a tire...

    Auto parts commercial accounts

All of my wholesale is either 20 or 25% off list, even for collision. We make significantly more selling parts under Ford warranty now that the laws changed so we don't have to kowtow to the big collision centers for 5% profit and a 45% return rate. We still have some accounts that are on...

    Auto parts commercial accounts

We had a customer bring in one of those Jeep Wagoneer things with a 6.4 and wanted to wait for the oil change. Autozone charged us $11.26/qt for M1 0W40. If anyone had bothered to give me a heads up I could have sourced it cheaper, but no-one plans ahead anymore I guess. OReillys was around...

    Auto parts commercial accounts

Autozone's webpage is nicer and it is substantially easier to print invoices when needed. We don't have a NAPA or AAP and the CarQuest here doesn't do online anything. Also an honorable mention for Parts Authority purely for the multitude of brands they carry. The parts navigation is clunky...

Sometimes we use that specific one in more than one spot. Usually one of our more McGyver customers will come in needing one that is disco duck and we usually stock those. They can be made to work where needed.

    SFI question.

They started calling it Sequential since the injectors would fire in time with the intake valve opening. Before that you had K-Jet for continuous and batch fire that either fired all the injectors or one bank at a time.

Direct injection engine struggles to warm up(Mazda 2.5NA) am I overreacting?

Another reason we use VINs: there is no 2017.5 in the Mazda GEPC. Only 2017 and 2018 with different listing for transmission type.

Direct injection engine struggles to warm up(Mazda 2.5NA) am I overreacting?

The turbo engines use a traditional thermostat. The aftermarket parts catalogs for these aren't great, I've looked, so we get a fair amount of people coming to us with wrong parts they have bought from other parts houses. Even on the dealer end, without the VIN the catalog can be cumbersome as...
