    Why Do We Complicate Things?

Ditto Mystic JT8, which used to be carried by Tractor Supply. It was one of the superior oils (to run of the mill store brands) that almost no one ever heard of ... Was inexpensive and performed very well in mixed fleet operations.

    20 hp Mariner low compression

With any 2-stroke (chainsaw, weedwacker, outboard, etc.) that exhibits low compression, the first thing is to look into the cylinder. If the piston and the bore are scored, it's not simple. If the piston skirt looks good through the exhaust port, it's almost certainly rings. They could be stuck...

    What oil do you recommend?

Quicksilver 25W-40 is one of the best oils on the market - period. For any full load or HD application it is superior to many automotive oils. Does not shear down as quick as many automotive oils... Gets used in race engines, motorcycles, and LOTs of boats, worldwide. It's my go-to oil for flat...

1998 4Runner Gas Mileage Dropping Off // Fuel Filter Changeout Picture

Agree with all of the above. But also use a timing light to see if it's close? Loss of timing and timing advance can lead to poor fuel mileage ...

What should I be using in a '83 SBC?

As long as that 305 is stock, any HDEO will be fine, but so would any good name brand marine oil like Quicksilver from Mercury. Bazzillions of boats out there with flat tappet cams. You could go looking for a specific oil, but why ... Use what you can get locally at a good price. Change at 3~5K...

Trying to save an otherwise junkyard bound car

Valves are fine. They'll work great at that low leakage rate. Iffy at 0.008 ... That's a pretty good warp. Get it machined. Get a can of Hylomar (same as RR head gasket dressing) and treat both sides. Install with assembly lube on threads and drive it till the sun dies.

John Deere Plus 50 II 0W40 (pics)

Excellent oil. JD has some pretty tough standards. I'd run +50 in any engine, anytime

Thinking about getting a CMC Gazelle (Mercedes replica kit car)

Fine little toy car for fun days. My biggest issue would be the frame ... If it's a flexy flier, I'd stay away. If it's rigid and handles well, motor on

    Fuel/Oil ratios in 1964?

I collect old chainsaws and outboards now. I was in the boating industry at an OMC shop in the 1960's. We batted this around with factory reps and the race boat guys. I ran a little J Class outboard in off-shore sometimes. AND, I owned a DKW sedan All used 32:1 unless they were plain...

Endurance racing in 1960s unbelievably dangerous

The 70's had some real great racing and some mind numbing engineering in some classes. Just the Chaparral Team stuff was enough to blow your mind. Leaf blower vacuum fans for down force. Air-Brake wing articulation. Automatics tied to cammer SBC's. The list is long and insane by today's thinking ...

    Quick question about seat interchange

I found out that 90's Pontiac GP 2-door interior would fit a 1970's Buick A Body (GS) that had been a gutted race car. Some trimming of the rear seat side panels and most just dropped in. MFG's hate to change machine tooling for body assembly lines if they can help it. So a wide range of stuff...

Time to do the car trailer deck

I quit using speed screws on trailer decks a long time ago. That's a production speed thing. No need for a DIY r4epair. I just grind/cut the old ones off flush with the frame. Then slip the plank in and drill 1/4" down through the wood and frame flange. Carriage bolt and nylock on the bottom...

    Lexus 3L V6 - room for XG3600 ??

Well, the issue is additional media area since I'm running BG109 ( EPR ) as a slow cleaning agent. 93,500 miles and fill hole looks a little grungy. So adding filter area seems appropriate ...

    NASCAR JOINS the 21st CENTURY

I lost interest when they did COT and started closing the small tracks. If they don't use something that actually looks like factory sheet metal (shapes) and they are not yellow hot brakes banging into turn 1, I'm long gone ...

    Lexus 3L V6 - room for XG3600 ??

I just got a nice older Lexus RX300 with the 3L V6. I see it's recommended to use Fram **3614. But that is short filter. Is there room to spin on a 3600 ??

    Oils for old engines

Quicksilver 25W-40 year round (Mercury Marine 4-stroke oil). One of the stoutest 4 stroke oils out there. Better in every way that what was available back when that engine was originally assembled
