High mileage turbo engine, what to run?

I just bought a 229k mile Volvo 740 turbo. The car has been kept really well, but is definitely in need of an oil change. The manual says 10w30, but to use 15w40 in conditions where there would be more oil consumption, such as towing or mountain driving. 5w30 is allowable in really cold...

Had the BMW's valve cover off today...have a look.

That's what the inside of a BMW M30 cylinder head with a bajillion miles and a suspect maintenance history looks like. Not too bad. The reason I had it off was to check those two banjo fittings on my cam oiler. They were good. And here's the valve cover: So, what do we think? I didn't notice...

New car, new oil thread. 1988 BMW 535is high mile

Well, the car isn't new at all. It's a 1988 BMW 535is with probably 220k miles on the clock. The engine is the 3.5 liter BMW M30 inline six. Runs great, has a slight lifter tick I think, but still fires right up and runs strong. It's winter here right now, and I don't have any factory manuals...

Good cleaner/degreaser for soaking aluminum parts?

Right, I've got a Series II 3.8 with a badly gunked intake manifold, and an even worse throttle body, as seen here: Basically I'd like to soak them in something overnight. IT doesn't have to be sensor safe, because I've removed them all, but it needs to be non-caustic. I was thinking of...

    Another car, another oil question.

I just bought a 1995 Bonneville SSE (not supercharged) with the 3800 series II and about 147k miles on it. What are people using for oil in their 3800s? I plan to use Wix filters, as ever.

    My new $500 beater.

Yep, the SE-R was getting a bit...uh...'worrisome' in a couple of different ways, so I sold it to a fellow SR20 forum member as a parts car for $400 and bought myself a fine peice of American barge-itude. It's a 1995 Bonneville SSE non-supercharged in gold with a brown leather interior, 147k...

Think I should get an analysis? ;) (pic)

No, I'm not being serious. No analysis needed here, I think Engine has been dying a slow death. It's an A15 powered DAtsun 210, which has been getting Rotella. I'm pretty sure the engine has gone about 4000 miles like this...only now is it starting to show any issues. I didn't bother to fix...

    High mileage 1991 SE-R

Just picked up a '91 Sentra SE-R, with an SR20DE engine, about 189k miles, and is clearly a VERY well used car. So well used that I bought it for $300. The engine runs great. No idea what the previous owner was using in it. Its a revver that gets hammered quite often. I don't have any books for...

Another "New car, what oil should I run?" thread.

Its a 1997 Buick LeSabre, has been very well kept, same owners for the past 143,000 miles (car has 153,000) Obviously, it has the 3.8 Previous owners took it to the same mechanic every time for all work and oil changes every 3k. I'm planning to use Wix filters, because thats what the nearest...

    Another one for you Volvo-ers.

Probably going to pick up a 1974 145 soon. Its a rebuilt engine, not sure what the miles on the rebuild are. Whats the recommended oil on the B20 motor?

What cheap 10w30 to use with my AutoRX?

The subjects are: An oil burning 1990 Plymouth Voyager with about 150k and a MitsuChrysler 3.0 A 1996 Toyota Camry LE with sludge in it's 5S-FE. About 112k miles. A 1986 Volvo 245 that has put 270k miles behind it and will put quite a few more behind it when I finally find a not-leaking...

Pulled the Camry's valve cover gasket today (big pics inside)

This is what I found inside: Not so bad I guess, but worse than the Volvo was. I guess when it comes time to Auto-rx the van and Volvo, I should do this car too. I'm wondering what oil I should be using. The car is a 1996 Camry LE with the 2.2l 5sfe motor, has covered about 112k miles and...

Pulled my Volvo's valve cover today.

And this is what I found. '270.000' miles indicated (likely a lot more...odo was broken at some point) and this is how things look: I think we can do better, no? I'm not sure what product and technique would work best for cleaning this up. MMO? AutoRX?

    My Napa is slamming Fram.

I visited a local Napa today, and, to my surprise, I found a little display consisting of a Fram, Napa gold, and Napa silver oil filters cut open and on display. You could pick up the top of the filter and see what was inside. About time some stores started advertising Fram's lameness. I...

    "Full Quality" filters?

I've noticed these filters while shopping around for car stuff. They're just usually called 'Full' and appear to be Asian in origin. WorldPac sells them. They look somewhat similar to your usual Nippon. They are the cheapest one that the places sell. WorldPac has never failed me for parts...

Think I should switch to a lighter weight oil?

Okay, the car is a '86 Volvo 240, B230F engine, running Mann W917s and Castrol GTX 10-30. The car does not like the cold, as I found this morning. In the brisk sub zero temps, the thing just didn't want to turn over. Its fine once warmed up though. I know its not a battery/starter type...

    FOURTEEN DOLLARS?!

I was just at partsamerica.com (its the website for Checker/Kragen/Schucks/Parts Plus) and for the heck of it had a look at their oil filters for my car. They had the usual junk like Fram and Pennzoil, and good stuff like Purolator and AC-Delco. But, then I happened to notice the Beck-Arnley...

Akk!! My Volvo has a hole in it!

This thread has all pics and info. Dammit this is lame as **** Not only do I need hoses now, but I also have a ******* HOLE IN MY HOOD. What really bugs me is that I can't figure out where it came from...road debris or if something flew off the motor.

Did I make the right choice for a fuel filter and PCV?

I went to Advance and bought a Purolator F20005 fuel filter and an PV1019 PCV valve for my Datsun. They seem to be well made, but I haven't put them on yet. Bought them mostly because they weren't real pricey. I plan to put them on tommorrow when the rest of the parts I ordered arrive. Good...
