I think you totally underestimate the frugality of many of us. Getting or not getting the tax credit may not be a deal breaker. But $1500 important to anyone, especially someone who is careful with expenses.

I have no particular go-to filter brand. But I do have filter brands that I like. For European cars, I like Hengst, Mahle, and Purflux. For anything else, I have no problem with premium filters from many brands.

I haven't calculated fuel economy on either of my cars for some time, because both seem to be pretty close. The Outback estimates a little worse than actual, but not enough to matter. And my E350 is spot on.
