    Additive Clash

I spoke to both Red Line and Motul reps about five years ago. No, I'm not going down the boutique hole, I use Pennzoil Pearl River blend (a fine aromatic coff...oh, wait...). Both told me, notice the hear-say, that cleaning agents in the add pack can strip off other additives from previous fills...

Tire Wear On Heavy Widebody Jets ?

I have a PhD (phony degree) in guessing but have an eye for human nature. My guess is that prespinning the tires would require *perfect* balancing or it might impart a mighty vibration in the cabin before landing. Not cool for the self loading freight. Recaps and the need for super precise...

    Fighter pilot culture

As something of an adjunct to the F-18 Autoland thread there is a new book out that tries to examine the fighter pilot culture academically. I have not read the book and have only been through a fairly thorough review. Michael W. Hankins, in Flying Camelot: The F-15, the F-16, and the...

Mooch VLOG - FA18 Carrier Autoland will become mandatory.

Those are some impressive benefits and seem worthwhile to the non-naval aviator it must be said. I recognize the loss of throttle and stick *fun* (sweat, fear, loose bowels and one less way to impress the Air Boss and other vultures with your consummate skills around the ship) as a real loss but...

Mooch VLOG - FA18 Carrier Autoland will become mandatory.

I hadn't realized how far this initiative had progressed. Apparently slated to become the norm, SOP, for getting aboard. Said to have so many redundancies that it will be mandatory henceforth. Increased safety, increased flight hours for tacair training, etc. etc. said to be reason for...

    Thrust Vectoring

The 360 degree variability of the Russian design has long fascinated me. The "what I don't knows" is probably a very long list including complexity vs. reliability, sensor/software/processing power to take advantage of it, response time of actuators, etc. etc. I salute them for the effort but...

AIM-54 Phoenix Missile. Was it really any good?

I recall, I hope accurately, that the Navy had to conduct, at Congressional insistence, a full up test aganst six targets simultaneously guided by the onboard AWG radar before the program would be allowed to proceed. I believe that test was successful. I doubt there was ever a real world combat...

    Firestone Destination LE3

I have the previous edtion bought now nearly seven years ago. They've been terrific. My first criteria in normal vehcles is wet traction. They've proved good at this. Have about 55K garage kept SUV miles on them and they're still dong well with more than half tread. I really recommend them strongly.

    New Swedish Fighter Jet

The Swedish neutrality is a useful fiction for them. They did sell to both sides in WWII which many Norwegians haven't forgotten. They are western leaning and everyone knows it but the diplomatic flexibility of claiming to be neutral has occasional advantages. Happily they never got neutered...

    New Swedish Fighter Jet

First thing to remember...you're not neutral unless you're an ARMED neutral. You are otherwise simply roadkill. Like most aeronautical weapons, especially in Europe, combat aircraft are jobs programs and technology incubators for the rest of the economy as well as someplace to train your...

    A10 Warthog 30mm gun

I was told of the (few apparently) times the M113/Vulcan was used on convoy duty in SVN. If there was ever a sniper or even the suspicion that there was a possible ambush setup the Vulcan would just chew down the jungle to 3-400 yards deep. Even the VC had better sense than to hit those. The...

    Air France A380

I flew to Milan and back in the early 2000's on Alitalia 767's. Shake, rattle and roll were the order of the day. I sat looking at the left engine nutate (think wobbly rotate) continuously out on the wing. The occasional iceberg in the background and knowing how few pins actually attach an...

Racing oil - not suitable for street use?

I have used the Motul 300V many times with success on the street. Motul's US rep told me it has a full street adpack of "12%" but unsurprisingly did not define the additives. Totally safe for street use. I used Redline street oil for almost 2 0 years in one vehicle, sadly now gone, and it had...

    Airline Fleet/Management in a crisis

I am shocked, SHOCKED, that you do not want to believe straight up lies about saving the environment. Thinking for yourself is falling out of favor especially if it results in actual logic. LOL You'll get no disagreement from me edy. The difference on the aerospace front is that most often...
