wife drove 08 Sienna with low oil for 2 days, with loud tapping

I OC'ed yesterday. Drained whatever oil the shop put in and filled with M1 0W40. I changed the shop installed oil filter as well, and I see black metal debries in the filter. Every single pocket looks like this. The car still drives fine. No abnormal noise from the engine

I do agree now that my "20 oil cleansing" idea was just my another 2nd order parameter analysis paralysis moment. However regarding your observation, nothing contrasicts to my 20W = more flow theory. Above certain RPM, pressure is regulated by the relief valve (thus no change in pressure...

SAE30 is 35% higher in viscousity over SAE20. I don't think the difference is trivial

Sorry I mixed up filter valve and pump valve. Filter valve is, as you said, only for bypassing the filter media. But the pump relief, i believe, relieves some oil back to the pan. In that loop, higher visc oil triggers the valve at lower volume flow rate. Or am I misunderstanding it?

Above certain oil pressure, the relieve valve opens and oil (partially) won't go through. And thicker oil hits the trigger at lower flow rate. Lower viscosity oil always gets pumped more in volume at high RPMs

Makes sense... so bigger clearance deserves thicker oil. On the contrary, I was thinking, for the 2 or 3 shorter OCIs before I get back to ordinary OCI with thicker oil, maybe I go through some 5W-20? (or even 0W-20) So thinner oil can (1) shoot more oil to the overhead cam area for better...

Now back to the BITOG topic. What oil I should buy?? (1) ST all mileage 5W-30 (10W??) jugs (2) havoline high mileage blend box 5W30 (3) M1 high mileage 12qt box Any recommendation for this potentially worn out engine?

update #3 I just called Toyota. They denied reimbursement but they did offer 400 dealership credit for future dealer bills. Which I took immediately. I can forgive my wife about 58%

So I found oil drips in the driveway, I went back to the garage. Jacked up and found that neither of the oil cooler line joints were wet but the joint between the engine and the transmission was wet - is that a common spot to see drips? They say it is engine oil, not the ATF.

I am jealous! Why they specifically state "no preventive replacement" in the document anyway

wife drove 08 Sienna with low oil for 2 days, with loud tapping

Update #2: New oil cooler line installed. My gas station garage bill was a size of a dealership bill (695USD!) Actually it was covered under Toyota campaign until 150k/10yr. My car is 152k/15yr so I missed it by a mile lol. The program did not offer preventive replacement. (Warranty enhancement...

wife drove 08 Sienna with low oil for 2 days, with loud tapping

ok, Some updates: (1) took most of a 5 qt jug of Supertech "all mileage" to reach the full mark on the dip stick (2) engine sounded normal (no tapping). But while engine is on, oil dripped like crazy (3) quickly drove to my neighbor gas station garage, jacked up and found one of the oil line...

wife drove 08 Sienna with low oil for 2 days, with loud tapping

I know right? Since the 08 Sienna always makes some sort of noise (mostly squeaks from suspension), she thought it was just another one... another ordinary noise. which amused me

It seems somewhere front, in the middle, lower half of the engine. But higher than the oil filter

I will buy some oil tomorrow and do exactly that. I think that is a good test - (1) starving oil? (2) oil level is ok but oil pressure still low?

wife drove 08 Sienna with low oil for 2 days, with loud tapping

I am debating if I should spend money to fix the leak or say good bye to my old friend. (1) my wife reported the van is "making noise" and she can smell something burning. And when asked she said it has been like this since Wednesday. (2) sure enough, there were oil drips in the driveway. Not a...
