Can a high HTHS ever be detrimental to engine protection?

Wear protection I believe is different than viscosity HTHS . How oils compare in a 4 ball or other friction test may be better ?

The truth about oil change intervals and analysis

Why high octane gas is part of the equation ? If you use a Top Tier gas and your vehicle is rated for 87 octane - then why use higher ?

    Switching to 5w30

I have found the newest M1 5W30 EP D1 / Gen 3 rated Synthetic oil to be surprisingly quiet in my otherwise noisy Hyundai Sonata - this could make for a good choice (don’t extend OCI beyond what your OM calls for).

    Another oil from Valvoline…

Curious if using Valvoline Advanced + a bottle of Rislone added to the oil would produce similar piston cleaning for less $ ?

    Valvoline Advanced vs Extended Protection

Valvoline Rxtrnded protection does not promise to extend your OCI , it only promises to provide extra protection during the normal OCI used .

The truth about oil change intervals and analysis

… Unless you drive a Hyundai / Kia Theta II GDI engine - then the severe service 3,000 - 3,750 mile . 6 months OCI is perhaps the better option.

    Should I run 5w-30 or 5w-40 or.....?

Hypothetically , could the same engine (minus the turbo charger) be able to run the higher grade 5W40 with equal results in protection , usability , etc. ? In Hyundai / Kia engines - the turbo versions allow for the 5W40 option while the normally aspirated engines allow for 5W30 max .

    Valvoline Synthetic Oil

I believe a key to potentially using is how has your engine been maintained , what type oil you use , what oil filter you use , what is your OCI and how well you maintain / change out your PCV ? … If you use a good name brand D1 / Gen 3 synthetic oil , Fram Ulter (or equivalent) oil filter , 5K...

    MMO synthetic

I saw it at O’Reilly for $13.99 . Since I would only consider to use for adding to gas - I’d rather maintenance dose with Redline SL-1 for a similar price or TCW-3 for less price . Full dose would be a bottle of Techron or Gum Out so that doesn’t leave a slot for MMO Synthetic .

    Rislone Engine Treatment Labeling Change

Your probably right (lol !) … I check the oil level every 2 to 3 weeks and add as required (keeping the oil level up to the F dip stick mark in this engine is best.)

    Rislone Engine Treatment Labeling Change

In my Hyundai GDI engine which uses close to a quart of make up oil over its OCI , I am going to top off with Rislone instead of adding make up oil . If it cleans the rings then oil consumption should only be improved a bit (win-win) .

    Mobil 1 Extended Performance

I’m going to weigh in here on the vehicles in my sig using the newer M1 5W30 EP SP D1/Gen3 rated “Triple Action” oil : This is definitely a different formulation than the older SN rated oil . Without scientific analysis I can say that my engines run quieter and smoother on it than previous M1...

Please help me understand Extended Oil Drain motor oils

Generally true IF you have a port fuel injection system and predominantly do interstate miles. If you do large city / suburb stop snd go , shirt trip driving I believe best to dial the OCI back to 5,000 miles / 6 months (which ever comes first) … If you drive a GDI engine vehicle that 5,000 mile...

+1 with advice from wlk above … Quaker State recommendations are what you want and 5,000 mile / 6 month oil change intervals are easiest to remember and will serve you well .
