How far would you drive on a gamble for a used car?

Did you end up buying this Subie? An interesting two stroke two cylinder mini-Beetle.

    1972 Honda Civic

Yep, that's a 600. We had a '76 Civic 1500 and found it to be really fun to drive, reliable and durable. It was pretty prone to rust, though. I'd not mind a nice old Civic as a good weather fun car although even a Mirage would annihilate one in a collision.

How far would you drive on a gamble for a used car?

While one man's trash might be another's treasure, the disclosure that the vehicle in question is being offered as as is and uninspected would not encourage me to drive very far. Probably no more than 100 miles and only as a nice day roadtrip at a leisurely pace.

Wow, Tesla laying off more than 10% of its world wide workforce, two Top Executives leaving

It may be that Tesla is making a shrewd business decision in cutting headcount now rather than waiting until it becomes a necessity. There are plenty of signals that other automakers are feeling a pinch currently, having grown accustomed to inflated margins over the past few years while seeing...

Why are OEM tires so bad?

Our lone Ford was a '97 Aerostar and it came on Michelins, the XWX IIRC and they were very good in all conditions. I found their application of a fairly expensive tire on their lower line minivan a little surprising.

Why are OEM tires so bad?

I've always found the OEM fit tires to be pretty good. Every set I've had on the seven vehicles we've bought new over the past nearly forty years lasted at least 50-60K with the Michelin Energies on the HAH going 72K with plenty of life left in them. These were tires from Michelin, Yokohama...

What is the single best vehicle to buy if you're a tightwad?

It looks like 1MM USD would buy you a project Miura or one that's been molested so not original. It looks like a little more than half that would buy you a very nice Countach. The time to have bought any Italian exotic was forty years ago, when many of what are now highly valued collectibles...

How accurate is the indicated MPG in your vehicle?

The Forester is consistently optimistic while the HAH is consistently pessimistic. Not of much concern once you know what to expect in terms of actual range.

    We Bought a 2024 Odyssey

We owned a minivan when we had young children. A very useful and functional vehicle, perfect for a family. Your Ody sounds really nice and surprisingly economical to drive. Best wishes for you and your family and your ownership experience with the van.

Would you replace at 4/32nds ?

I think you have a point. My experience with Michelins is that they seem to work well over their entire tread life. They remain in balance, don't develop structural problems and retain good grip.

Dirty US roads with sharp objects

At 102K, the HAH has required three tire repairs, all to the right rear. The first two punctures happened in quick succession around 30K and the third on then new tires after about 3K of use. The Forester had something in both rear tires last spring. Since I had planned on replacing the OEMs in...

Sweet vintage Chevy truck but is it worth $45k?

While asking might seem a little high, it would not surprise me to learn that when you add up the actual expenses involved in building this thing you'd come pretty close to 45K or maybe more. You'd have to start with a good, straight, so premium priced original and spend from there. Used to be...

As I recall, GON has also bought some very nice MBs at auction for pennies. I was quite envious,

What are you eating right now?

A nice, dry Italian Proseco, baked salmon and steamed broccoli. Nice little celebration of Friday for us, which does mean something to the still working spouse, me. I'll fix that this year.

What is the single best vehicle to buy if you're a tightwad?

As others have noted, purchase cost is only a part of the puzzle. Fuel consumption matters as well as do repair needs and costs, driven by the ability and willingness of the owner to work on the thing as well as the availability of parts new and used as well as a good local indie shop. Insurance...

Safety violation does not end well, towing a camper

This was a very ugly event regardless of fault. It is a shame that she died on what should have been a joyful family trip. I didn't know that so many states actually allow people to ride in a trailer under tow. Simple caution would seem to preclude this in any event. Had the woman been riding...

No, if anyone doesn't like a given line of policy they can always vote for a candidate having policy positions closer to their own. This is America, after all.
