Should I use PH7317 Fram oil filters or throw them out?

Yeah, I suppose if the filter was bypassing the for 5 minutes on every cold start, its not ideal... Hmmm.... Now you have me thinking...

Should I use PH7317 Fram oil filters or throw them out?

I have used up my old stash of CRV filters on the Outback, the only thing I really worry about is that they have a lower bypass pressure, which maybe could have the filter bypass more than normal... Anyways I've done 4-5 oci's now with the fram's and nearing 100k miles with no apparent issues...

How far would you drive on a gamble for a used car?

I've thought about flying somewhere down to the rust free areas of the US, to get a nice rust free older car could be a good adventure. But the prices on used cars in the US seems to be about the same as a newer nearly rust free version here.... at least with the exchange rate as it is now...

    The problems with GDI

Sometimes I wonder how much engineering expertise the manufacturers have? Or have testing budgeted for? Some of the mistakes/oversights are pretty significant? Or some manufacturers just don't care? It seems toyota usually designs and builds for well beyond the warranty period, so they add...

    Favorite ATV brand?

I like my little 01 Suzuki Kingquad 300, for a utility machine. 3 ranges, lockable front diff and 5 gears, low CoG, and slow, and just works year after year with just oil and filter changes. The newer Honda machines are nice on the trails though!

Why retire Typhoon type 1 jets ?

Piece by piece, over decades, they've got Chechnya and Belarus already, next Ukraine, then Moldova, then maybe Georgia, then Azerbaijan has some oil, why not? After that demonstrate they have a good nuclear deterrent again, and start probing around the small baltic states, see what's what with...

    The problems with GDI

It is interesting that the Civic has gone back to port injection for the 2.0l and it has higher compression than their 1.5T, and the same combined mileage ratings.... The turbo has more torque and hp, but if you don't care, then the more complex engine has really done nothing for you?

I sure do miss cheap oil.

In other markets, they do offer more basic versions of the cars we get here. I presume because those markets are more competitive and significant market segment wants a simpler car. We've bought two base model new cars, but the Outback has got everything we really want/need anyways, we voted...

Not a great conversation with my local Infiniti dealer today. Least they were honest.

Maybe next time call sales guy who sold you the last car? He is the one who is interested in keeping you as a customer. My parents 2016 Forester just had the valve body go bad on the transmission and it was just outside the extended warranty. They didn't use the selling dealer for regular...

    The problems with GDI

Interesting stuff! So far we have remained GDI free but it seems some of the manufacturers are getting it figured out.

What is the single best vehicle to buy if you're a tightwad?

Yeah good point, all the Prius taxis I've been in seem to have spaceship mileage on them, get driven the gas as an on/off switch, have decent interiors still, and they drivers all say they rarely replace a battery pack or anything before 300k miles.

Why are OEM tires so bad?

    Picked up a free LT2000

Yeah, these things are pretty simple and easy to find parts and work on. My lawn is bit of a hilly fruit tree/bush covered obstacle course so a wider deck, or bigger machine isn't really going to help me much. Plus I use it cut our mtb trails with a few berms and jumps so it cuts some dirt and...

Why are OEM tires so bad?

The OEM Tiger Paws on our 03 Tracker were like tread wear 600 traction B and temperature C, and the wet grip got even worse as they aged.... The still have ~6/32 though at 80k miles when I dumped them.... They were mileage specials for sure. The tires that came on the Outback though seem to...

What is the single best vehicle to buy if you're a tightwad?

It would be interesting to see what the quick lube guys would do if a Miura rolled in!

    Homelite Spark Arrestor

I would use carb cleaner or brake cleaner to dissolve the carbon build up, soak it so you can light it on fire too, and keep it going with a propane torch to burn the carbon out. If that doesn't work, I would drill a hole through if you're not worried about a fire.

Would you replace at 4/32nds ?

You can kind of make the same arguments for replacing the tires at 6-7/32. They won't work as well to prevent hydroplaning as tires at 10/32. Or I found once I put on UHP summer tires(ones that crack at -7C) with good grip in the rain and on dry pavement, "touring" level all season tires like...

303 yellow bucket good enough for my needs?

I guess its better than no oil! How old are these tractors and how much to they leak? Probably the little tractors from the 30's, 40's and 50's just needs something oily in there and this is very similar to what they ran on for decades. I suppose you could mix it 50/50 with a good THF? If...

Wasted $$, aka classic Corvette restorations

I guess if you never damage them, or wear out parts, in a decade or two there will be no one left who knows how to repair them? Some of the cars in the Goodwood revival race grids are "irreplaceable" but if it was all made by hand in 1962, then does replacing some parts of the car now using the...

Safety violation does not end well, towing a camper

Biggest help is to have the trailer loaded properly to start with, and have a good hitch set up. I am amazed how unstable those trailers were to start with such small oscillations and just get progressively worse? If nothing else, atleast make sure you've got some tongue weight. Also I guess...
