Synthetic 75w90 instead of SAE 90 in Yamaha...

I've always used the recommended SAE 90 lube in the lower unit of my Yamaha F115 outboard. I really prefer to use synthetic oils/lubes, and was wondering if a 75w90 synthetic gear oil could be used in place of conventional SAE 90 gear oil?

    Oil in 2003 BMW 320i...

I changed the oil in my son's 2003 BMW 320i today. Based on my experience with my BMW 740il, I went with GC 0W30. AFTER I changed the oil, I noticed in the manual that 5w30 or 5w40 is recommended. I know GC is thicker than many 5w30 oils at operating temps but I'm just wondering if it's OK based...

    Help - 2011 BMW: AMSOIL 5W40, GC, or M1 0W40

I recently sold my '99 BMW 740iL with 340,000 km on it. The majority of the time I owned it, I used German Castrol Ow30. I tried Mobil 1 Ow-40 which has great specs, but my engine seemed a little noisier. When I sold the car, it had no oil consumption - ever- between oil changes. My oil changes...

Ram Hemi hydraulic lifter failure...oil related?

I just know it's a Hemi with the MDS system. Dealer is sending worn/defective parts to Chrysler for inspection. Fully understand that mechanical things fail eventually, although this was premature.

Ram Hemi hydraulic lifter failure...oil related?

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram with 5.7 litre Hemi and about 65,000 miles on it. Just had a problem with one of the roller hydraulic lifters--it collapsed causing a loud ticking/knocking sound and wear on a valve. Definitely not normal for the Hemi engine which is robust. Replacement involves removing...

    Quaker State 75w140 synthetic. Opinions...

I was going to use Mobil 1 75w140 in the rear diff of my '09 Ram but can't find it anywhere locally. Quaker State 75w140 synthetic is readily available and the specs look similar to Mobil 1. Anybody have any experience with the QS product, and if so did you use and additive with a limited slip...

2009 Dodge Ram 1500 rear differential fluid choice

I'm going to change the fluid in the rear differential on my 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. The recommended weight is 75/140 which is what I will use. I plan on using a full synthetic, and just wondering if anybody has a recommendation as far as brand. Rear differential fluid is something I know very...

2003 BMW 320i possible sludge. Recommendations...

Volvohead, thank you for your thoughtful and detailed reply. I believe at this point I am simply going to use a quality synthetic with good cleaning characteristics like PP or PU. I have used Seafoam before both as a fuel additive and in my crankcase (in very small amount) and may do that after...

2003 BMW 320i possible sludge. Recommendations...

Thank you for all the helpful replies. Antonmnster in particular made a great point, and I appreciate all the comments from everybody. We've only had the car a couple of days and it is running great...the 3-series is so much more fun than my 7-series! The dealership changed the oil prior to our...

2003 BMW 320i possible sludge. Recommendations...

My son just bought a 2003 BMW 320i from a dealership and had me check it out prior to purchase. Car is in great shape with reasonable mileage, and the price was excellent. A friend of mine works at the dealership. The car drove very well...pulled right to redline smoothly and the handling and...

Lost track of the score here. Anyway, I have a strong preference for synthetic.

    5w20 vs 0w20

It seems to me that if the 5W20 is Ford approved, there is no reason to use 0W20. The difference between the two oils is incremental, and since one has Ford approval then why second-guess their engineers? Just MHO.

    Synthetic oil snafus

The manual for my BMW 7-Series is very specific that only synthetic oil should be used, and an "approved long-life" oil at that. Based on my oil life monitor I could change the oil every 25,000 km (15,000 miles) but I change it at 15,000 km. The car now has 330,000 km on it and the engine is a...

    help with oil-consuming 1MZ-FE

I really think it would be worthwhile to have a competent mechanic check the engine. Years ago I had a Volkswagen Rabbit that started going through oil like crazy. I had to check it at every gas stop, and more often than not it needed oil. I can't remember the actual consumption, but I would...

How little ZDDP is safe for a -98 Lada engine?

I'd cut "addguy" some slack on this one. I mean, Lada doesn't evoke positive images over here. I recall a road test in Car and Drive magazine back in the day when the first Ladas were imported into North America. They...uh...were pretty harsh on the car, but did say "It's only $3,000.00 which is...
