    Oil not getting dirty

I guess I’m not sure. I do oil changes on heavy oilfield machinery, and the oil darkens with just the post pm run-up, within 20 minutes. My personal equipment generally gets the oil changed once a year, so I really can’t remember what it looked like last time.

    Oil not getting dirty

Thanks for this! The big tractor has only 700 hours, the little one is at about 400. I buy the OEM John Deere filters, I don’t know the specs.

250w gear oil in brush hog

I am actually using Lucas hub oil, which is a 250w gear oil. Seems to be working fine!

250w gear oil in brush hog

This is good to know. I have seen some very old rotary cutters still in operation, so I guess I may just be over-thinking this. Thank you!

    Oil not getting dirty

Hello, all! I have recently switched all of my diesel equipment over to Mobil Delvac Extreme 15w40 synthetic. Now even after several hours of running, the oil looks clean. It isn’t turning black- I can still see through the oil to the dipstick. I do my oil changes quite early based on...

250w gear oil in brush hog

Grease does not dissipate heat as well as oil. Otherwise, this would be a great choice. Thank you!

250w gear oil in brush hog

That I don’t know. I do have a temp laser. I will find out next time I’m mowing. Ambient temps here are often 100 plus. That’s one reason I’m thinking of a thicker oil. Redline makes an 80w250, and Amsoil has a 250w as well. Both synthetic.

250w gear oil in brush hog

Seals don’t leak. Extreme oklahoma heat thinning the oil, and shock-loading are my biggest concerns. Thanks for the input!

250w gear oil in brush hog

John Deere actually makes a semi fluid corn head grease, but I really prefer oil. Just a personal preference.

250w gear oil in brush hog

“ Bush Hog” is a brand name. “Brush hog” is the term most commonly used when referring to rotary cutters. I used the term because nearly everyone knows what that is. I have 3. One is a Woods RC5. It’s about 5 years old. One is a a frontier RC 2084. Also about 5 years old. I don’t know much about...

250w gear oil in brush hog

50w transmission fluids don’t typically contain extreme pressure additives, which are required for hypoid gears such as a brush hog gear box. I read the specs, looks like the Mobil does. Also, I have never seen yellow metals in a brush hog. The manufacturer calls for a GL5 fluid. The spec sheet...

250w gear oil in brush hog

Any thoughts on running a 250 weight gear oil in a brush hog? It gets so extremely hot here in Oklahoma, and I am wanting something that won’t thin out so much. This is a low HP, low speed application. A heavier oil will also protect better under shock- loading, which is common in brush hogging...

    Mobil Delvac Extreme 15W40

I have 3 John Deere tractors, and a 15kw generator with a Kubota diesel. The biggest engine in my operation is 45hp. All are diesels. My engines typically run less than 200 hours per year, but alot of it is heavy use, such as brush hogging in the Oklahoma heat. I do a full service on my...
