New Engine, When to Switch to Synthetic

Hello, I have a newly rebuilt engine with about 4 hours on it. At what point can a safely switch to a high quality synthetic? Thanks! Josh

The 2,000 miles was over about 3-months with lots of short trips. Most trips are <2 miles. However, on the weekend the stretches are significantly longer.

I went to German Castrol 0W30 with a Pureone Oil filter. I will definitely switch out the filter. Corrosion does make sense as it sat a lot. Sometimes as long as 2-weeks at a time.

This is the 3800 Generation III non-supercharged. I am using a K&N filter which makes me wonder. I may switch to a paper filter to see if makes any difference on the next oil change. Thanks for the heads up. I will look for your posts.

I have treated this car incredibly well, so I am confused by the high wear metals. The car has 64,000 miles on it right now and this is the first oil analysis. I purchased the car with 17,000 miles on it and have always run good synthetics but switched to Mobil 1 about 1 year ago. The miles...

It is my brothers car and he used Castrol Syntec 5W30. Interesting find though.

I changed the oil due to a suspected coolant leak. I was using the test to verify whether there was contamination. So, Addguy thanks for the smart comment but that is not the case.

    Castrol - 0W-30 (GC) - 8,500 mls - 07 Silverado

Hello, I have been following this thread and am curious as to why idling for warm up is bad. My logic tells me that cold oil is thick and therefore not lubricating properly until the viscosity drops as the engine heats up. So, by letting the engine heat up, the oil thins out before driving...

DO you think that permanently screwed up the bearings?

No I didn't. However, I did wash everything and blow it out with compressed air.

Yes, definitely not my brightest moment. In fact, I am very upset with myself that I did not do more homework prior to coming up with this concoction. I am convinced that it added to the high wear in the first sample. My thoughts were that it would help to suspend the dirt and metal during...

    MMO and oil buring

I do not think you are burning oil. The flash point of MMO is 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This low flash point will cause the volatiles to flash off at operating temperature. So, you are adding MMO and it is basically evaporating leaving behind the additive pack and detergents. I had this same...
