Home Depot in NC has Reem pleated filters that I buy for my home system. They are like merv 6 and are much better than the fiberglass rock catcher filters. I will keep them in for 3 months at a time. After 1 1/2 months I will blow them out with my air compressor.

Very sorry for your lost! We had to put our Lab down 8 months ago because of cancer also. Wife volunteered at a dog rescue to help out for a few weeks walking and feeding dogs. Low and behold she found a wonderful Lab mix at the rescue and she has been great! Believe me it will be worth looking...
