Used to own an 84 300sd as well, still miss that car! It was great for road trips. I ran Rotella T6 in it and changed around 7500 miles. Bought it with 150k miles and put about 120k miles on it before it was totaled. Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 would be solid choice as well, but seems harder to find...
Yup I got the Elring one from RM European, they had the lowest price at the time. It's good quality and fit just like the OEM one. I've had zero issues with it in almost 2 years now.
I've often used synthetic on personal engine rebuilds with no issues. Whether it be a flat tappet VW engine or a hydraulic roller engine, I wouldn't hesitate using synthetic. I've also never used a break in oil either in any personal or professional engine I've built.
2013 Bmw X5 35i xdrive 5,387mi OCI. No oil usage.

I’d say that’s highly likely, at least the only reason I can think of where the viscosity would make a big difference. There’s plenty of farmers and fleets up here in Minnesota that’ll run the same oil in all their equipment. Or people that didn’t know about the lifter change or TSB and just run...
Personally I'd run 5w-40 in it all year and sleep better at night. That's what we run in our new Ram field service trucks as well. We had a new tech start at our shop last week who came from a Ram dealer. We got into an oil discussion and he stated that all they used at that dealer was Rotella...
Apologize for the late reply! It's been working great! Hesitation from a stop is still gone and shifting performance is definitely improved, which is really nice. I've only had it down to the single temps so far, but zero hesitation and smooth shifts at that temp as well with minimal warmup...
I apologize for the late replies, didn't realize I had been "off the grid" for so long! You may have found out by this point which fluid to use. But long story short it was a lot of Googling, as correct info is a bit hard to nail down. Ended up on the ZF website and found a lot of great info...
2013 Bmw X5 35i xdrive 117,500 miles
Drained out OEM ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid and dropped pan
Installed new ZF pan w/filter
Filled with 5.7 qts HPL Green Cold Climate ATF
Just got back from a 2900 mile road trip. Transmission had a bit of a hesitation from a dead stop before fully engaging. That...
Just saw yesterday the Walmart I usually go to had about 10 jugs of this oil back on the shelves as well. Even though there is no more “spot” for them. Wonder if they’ll throw them back on clearance in a month again? *fingers crossed they do haha
My local Indy Euro shop uses Total Energy 9000 and put it in everything they service. They put in the 5w-40 when they did the oil pan gasket on my X5 last year. Overall it seemed ok, but there were some reasons I didn't like it. It's definitely on the thick end of the scale and my engine just...
Finally got the chance to replace my cracked valve cover on the X5. Not a fun task to say the least. Changed out the plugs while I was there, according to service records they had about 60k on them. Valve train and head looked pretty clean overall, a few varnish spots. According to the service...
Our bulk is Valvoline premium blue one solution 15w-40. Nice not having to have separate oil for CNG’s. Our field service guys do service a bunch of different applications. So we do have pallets of pretty much every other Valvoline diesel oil made. We usually have some cases of Rotella T4...
Just got 3 5qt jugs of Pennzoil 0w-40 for 2 oci's on the BMW, mainly due to the rebate. Also bought 6 Fleetguard LF16224 oil filters from work for the Hyundai. Can't really find any specs on them unfortunately. But for about $3 after employee discount, figure they'd be fine for 5k oci's.
