Does your oil filter housing cap have the cage attached? I've seen others post that without the cage, the filer can distort.

You might want to check out tirerack.com. I had a the same problem when I bought my X3, two new Prielli's V rated, and two used Bridgestone's on the rear. I was able to find V rated, they were dropped shipped to one of their installers. Over all a good experience.

You might want to get a odor bomb, I've used these before to get smoke smell out of cars. I used one I picked up at Pep Boys, set it off and place it by the AC intake and let it circulate.

BMW makes pretty solid engines, however when neglected then tend to very problematic. I suspect with all the sludge built up he'll have ongoing problems with the VANOS system, which is driven by oil pressure.
